Stuck on loading screen.

I have been away a while and now wish to play once again.
I have loaded everything and get to the character slots ( I have a couple of older ones).
I make a new character and then get stuck upon the screen that says "loading in progress"...I have left it up for over an hour or two at times.
Please help me get into the game. I have an account and the loader puts me through to the servers and then to the character slots.

Ok.....made a new account with another username and password.
Still get to create a character but from there it is still........loading...in progress....forever.
I still get no farther than that. This should help narrow it down a bit.

I turned my setting for DirectX from 10 to 9. Now logged in.
