    Default Do not install akamai

For the love of god do not install this software!

I have just now gotten my computer back up and running; I had to completely reinstall windows because even a system restore would not get rid of Akamai, and I was completely shut down once it installed.

I would like to play the new quests that I shelled out money for, but if I have to install malware on my computer to load the game, which that same malware keeps crashing.....!

As much as I don't like netsession at least educate yourself about Akamai.

Do you have a printer attached to your machine? If so, do you have Adobe products on your machine?
Do you play any other games on your machine?
Do you go to any sports websites and play their games?
Do you watch any interactive events on your computer?
What is your anti-virus on your machine?
Did you know that McAfee(yes the virus software company) uses the Akamai Edge Servers via netsessions to send out their software updates in a efficient manor?

Hundreds and perhaps thousands of applications are impacted by Akamai every day with an impact on the world's population probably in the billions.

I went to log-in after the last update and could not if I did not accept this 3rd party spyware from Akamai. And yes no matter how much they try to tell you its "not", is a load of dung. Reluctantly I installed it and then 2 hours later I had multiple other game issues trying to log into other games I have been playing for years. The other game anti-hack software wouldn't allow me to connect, Took me many hours talking with there support teams, and finally they asked what new programs were last installed on my computer. Akamai was the only thing new in a weeks time! they determined the other anti hacking services were blocking the games with Akamai running. so I had to delete it. Instantly afterwards all other games I was having an issue with worked again. I talked to my Techs from Geek squad at Best Buy where I have my computer purchased and maintained, and they reported that this type of shared uploading/downloading and informational gathering is exactly how many hackers are recently gaining access to many systems. recommendations..DO NOT USE IT!
As long as this type of services are forced upon me not by choice I will no longer subscribe to DDO. It should be a voluntary decision to participate or not. as of now I cant even log into the game without consenting to the program, remember when this used to be called extortion and/or strong arm tactics to force people to use something they did not want to

Then use the DDO-ML alternative launcher. It has it's own thread.

Seriously they should just remove the 3rd party software because its doing more harm then good. using an alternate launcher that may or may not be safe to use. can you guarantee that it is not bugged or even hacked? who created it, does ddo back its use, if so why, why not just get rid of the issue creating the need for an alternate?

    It is open source, no?

What evidence have you that it is causing any harm, much less more harm than good?

Steam stopped working after i got akamai for DDO, this would explain a lot...
    Thanks for the info.
I tried getting rid of akamai by using the uninstal option in my software list after i deleted DDO
(see other thread). It reapeared in mij list before i started to download DDO again, what would cause this?

There's PyLOTRO too that works well as third party software.
If you are worried anbout harm, DDO-ML and PyLOTRO are open source, so you just grab the source, check it to make sure there's no malicious code into it and use your favorite compiler to compile them. That way you know that your third party software is safe...

Any computer connected one way or another on Internet can be hacked or compromised, it's a matter of time, knowledge and will to do it.
If you are that paranoïd about your computer, you should keep your computer in a Faraday cage, at the bottom of a 500m deep mine shaft, connected to an independent power source, absolutely no network connection ( wired or wireless )... With a lot of physical security to reach it, that's the only ( almost ) certain was to have a ( relatively ) safe computer.

Yes, its true that many companies use Akamai servers BUT they don't do it via having the the Netsession client installed. Akamai has a LOT of servers worldwide and provide distribution for a cost, obviously a lower cost than companies who would be using their own servers, but DDO's use is different. Netsession is NOT something that users should be forced to use to play a game that charges users (albeit not all users) to play, it is an unnecessary virus/malware vector. It's tough enough trying to keep PCs safe these days, particularly with online finance growing, that an optional product would take this tact to make my system less safe. Also, this game is played worldwide... what Akamai says you are giving it permission to do when you 'sign' their EULA is not 'technically' legal in some jurisdictions even with 'supposed' consent the EULA provides since users do not actually have control over what bandwidth Akamai is using due to the nature of the Akamai EULA and the Netsession client.

    'Nuf said.

They were sold the wrong product for what they wanted to do.... well not exactly, but they were told how to use a product that is not really doing what they wanted it to do.

What they needed/wanted is the Akamai Geographically distributed server service... Instead they got the netsession thingie.

Default IF DDO knows there is an issue simply make it voluntary to accept

The simple course of action to remedy this obvious issue is to make the akamai program voluntary. If you choose not to accept the service you should still be able to update the game as it has always been able to in the past. Never had an issue with update times or any of the current issues ever!! If is not broke why change it. If the company knows they did not get the service they intended to get, then why was it implemented, that is a really boneheaded move on any corporate decision making if ever I saw one. Just remove it or make it a choice, do not make it mandatory forced action. Also, I do have Lords of the Rings online from Steam/Turbine, and it does not require Akamai to run its launcher. So then why on DDO? Oh and yes it says you can remove the software after installation..that's not as easy as they make it seem, many people have had issues removing it from their computers since Akamai launched. Don't take my word for it just Google it and read for yourselves, it is posted all over the internet. If I get a new product in my company, I don't attach it to my other services and force my client to get it. I offer it as a choice or added supplement. Simple if it will benefit some users then let them decide. thanks for your time in this matter, this will be my last post. I am moving on to something better.
