    Was your character multiclassed?

You cannot have more than 3 classes total. Meaning that if you had multi-classed into three classes, you must chose one of those three classes as your first level (and subsequently until you reach a level that you only had 2 different classes).

If that makes any sense to you.

What's your alignment? Monks have to be lawful.

To clarify for anyone who might be confused by this:

If you had a 17 cleric / 2 rogue / 1 fighter, and you wanted to switch to 17 cleric / 2 monk / 1 fighter you would first need to know what levels you took each class.
    So, let's assume you did

    R/F/Cx5/R/Cx12

Now, even though you are currently level 0 waiting to choose your first class in the lesser reincarnation, the game still treats you as a triple class cleric/rogue/fighter.
If you tried to swap out the first rogue rogue for monk, you would in effect be trying to turn the toon into a 1 monk / 1 rogue / 17 cleric / 1 fighter, which cannot be done.
So, Level 1 you would want to swap the Rogue out for Cleric. The reason for this is so that Rogue and Fighter both only have a single level remaining, and either can be swapped out for a new 3rd class.
Level 2, the previous fighter level, can become anything now, so now you take Monk.
Your character is now treated as a cleric/monk/rogue.
You continue to level the toon as cleric for the next 5 levels again (7 cleric / 1 monk so far), and take monk in place of the 2nd rogue level. You are now treated as a dual class toon since both the fighter and rogue levels are gone, and you've only replaced them with monk or cleric. Any remaining levels can be whatever you want just like normal at this point.
