Pure barbs have fallen out of favor since U19 rolled out, for all the reasons cited here. tl;dr summary: pure barbs didn't get as many DPS goodies as other classes did from U19; and their self-sufficiency still stinks due to lack of self-healing and Rage blocking things like using SLAs & Heal scrolls.

That said, a classic pure barb is still fine for most content, IMHO: max STR, high CON, the usual DPS feats (i.e., Power Atk, Cleave, GC, Imp Crit:Slash, THF/ITHF/GTHF, Overwhelming Crit); run fast, hit hard, crush enemies, lamentations, etc.

If you do go with a pure barb, you will need to have a dedicated healer. Hirelings will suffice.

You can get away with using cure pots during the low levels, but will need a dedicated healer later on.

    Hej,

    sad to say you´re right.

From my Point of view: My 2nd life human Barb managed heroic Content all easy with a friends and hires in Party. Enemys died before dealing much damage. When reaching epic Levels, i bite the dust in FOTW or LD destiny. I was in epic cavalry Tier3 (ac somewhere ~70, prr ~50), DR13 by fate, epic phiarlan (blurry) and epic Stalker ring (ghostly) + dodge 14% and not bad geared at all (but not ultimate). Using pots. I really lost the Motivation to Play.

Took my +20 heart from bank at that time and switched back into fighter. Voila, the Party started again. The damage and hp were even same to better, higher survivability, healings from EDs, fun!

I won´t say it´s not possible to make a brute barb, but with just 2nd life and no completionist, no 256 past lifes and ultimate gear, i didn´t saw light at the end of the tunnel and felt horrible to Play.

Just my personal opinion from an more than part-time-Player.

    Default halfling barb

Halfling Barb with Healing Dragon Marks or Bladeforged Self Reconstructing works. Throw in a Power or Wizardry item for a Blue bar and twist in Cacoon and you can survive most content. I have solo'd EE content on my Barb 18/1 Ftr/1Rgr by doing ranged stuff on the bosses and melee'ing everything else. Some form of CC is necessary like Stunning Blow or Improved Trip or through ED's.

Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Thf or Twf x3, Stunning Blow, IC; Slashing, ext., or Dwarf with Con Base and Maxed SR...

Doesn't barb Rage block both of those, though? Not to mention BF barb req's at least two LRs and an alignment change.

    Default yes

It does....but sometimes you have to dismiss rage heal up. You got to do what you got to do. Honestly, when running solo on a Barb, I don't Rage when fighting Red Named..

Aye and Bladeforged Barb can be expensive..

I wouldn't do a Pure Barb these days anyways..... There just isn't much benefit unless you run in a static group with a healer who likes to watch health bars all day....

What I might suggest is a halfling variant on maddmatt70's Battlerager (i.e., TWF barb 12 / FvS or cleric 4 / rog or rgr 4) who takes halfling DM+Emp Heal; that way you have Ameliorating Strike & Heal DM. Of course, at that point you've drifted reaaaally far from OP's original goal of a pure barb...

Default If You want a Pure Barb....

The max str pure barb build for Frenzy Bezerker isn't all frenzy enhancement line anymore. Get enough in FB to have Death Frenzy (primarily for the crit multiplier). Then go Ravager up to the top tier for increased critical threat range. Take and spam great cleave/cleave. Take stunning blow. Max STR every way you can, don't miss a chance if you want to endgame DC. Get to STR 80 and you are in business. Warning: Even then pure barb is not a solo EE build and stun DC will falter for you at inopportune times. But the FB build is flexible and can effectively use best situational weapons in fights.

You will be OP on EH and not very self sufficient on EE. Bring a friend with heal.

Now to be more survivable as pure barb (more...not most): wear incorporal. Max dodge. spam improved uncanny dodge. Take haste as an epic feat. Get lots of fort. Up your PRR with various methods. get UMD in your build (coldshield, heal, displacement if you can). Get busy with other epic destinies (sentinel, shiradi, dreadnought, etc.) Heals and survivability can be found there as well.

Do some of these survivable things and you will be in the game just fine at endgame.

    my $0.02.

    Default barb

I forgot to mention. I tr'd my pure Barb a long time ago to a 18/2 Barb/Ftr and about a year ago to a 18/1/1 Barb/Ftr/Rgr that had some serious Burst Damage including "Furyshot". While he could solo some EE content, I had to take a lot of healing "breaks" and it really sucked. I Tr'd him two weeks ago to a "Zeus" like build. I no longer have any Barbarians in my stable. Not many experienced DDO'ers would recommend Pure Barb or even deep splashed Barbarians anymore....

is there a video of this somewhere? I would dump my Cetus in a heartbeat for a reconstructing barb, but I don't want to shell out all the TP for the reincarnations/alignment changes etc. etc

Everything from everyone that has anything to say, says it doesn't work while using Barbarian Rages. Ya, I would swap out to a Bladeforged Barbie in a Heartbeat and pay whatever it costs.... if id did work.....
