Default Update 21: uninstalled here...how about you? (a poll)

I've uninstalled DDO thanks to the need to install software not previously needed to play the game, and the shady EULA from Akamai. How about you? I'll start with 1, reply with ascending numbers to show that you too are not happy, and send a message.

I know several people have quit over this. I know dozens more who will be doing the same. Lam said it was a bad idea.. and it still went live.

Shouldn't that tell you something Turbine?

    Just deinstalled DDo.
Honestly i cant be arsed to activate/deactivate that Akami stuff manually every time.
We have 2014, if you do not make it comfortable and acceptable for your costumer you have one less.
Given my interest in ddo was not so huge as 2 years ago but i still would have played from time to time.

The strangest thing is, i am completely calm.
no anger, no frustration, just disappointment.

After a dozen of threads about the yellow-snow-cube for a Facebook "like" you still thought Akami would be a good idea?
Oh well you also thought Pando and Awesomium are a good idea so maybe i should have known it better from the start.

    Thanks for the Fish

    4. I might come back if I can update without having a third party software installed on my PC. Until then they won't get any of my money. Cancelled my VIP that was to renew on the 14th.

You people crack me up. Seriously, you're letting a harmless program that is used by large corporations as a means to transfer large amounts of data to multiple clients get you THAT upset...it's comical. Seriously, I have schizophrenia, and the paranoia you guys are presenting is making even me go "really?!"

Sorry Turbine, but I can't play until this is changed. Please don't do this to LOTRO.

It's not paranoia, it's principle. I have not cancelled my subscription, nor have I updated yet either. I am reserving judgement until my analysis is complete, and I'm hoping that Turbine will abandon this change (though I don't expect them to).

Besides, as has been pointed out, the Akamai NetSession client is not required to use the Akamai CDN. Sure boatloads of content is delivered to my browser by the Akamai CDN, but no p2p client is required, just an open source web browser, with no open ended EULA.

Of course people know that almost everything can be tracked. That is not the objection here, the objection is to a completely unnecessary piece of software that can hijack your connection at any time, backed by a completely open ended (and legally indefenisble) EULA. But who among us has the time or money to take Akamai to court over it? Is DDO worth all that? More and more of us are concluding that it is not.

I shall finish my dissection of the Akamai client before I decide.

The program behaves like a trojan, wastes system resources and is completely unnecessary. So why are they forcing people to use something like that when there is no need for it and people said they didn't want it?

Even if it is legit (although completely unnecessary) there are more than a few of their players who have been on the edge of quitting for a long time due to bugs, poor quality or just other interests. For them this is the straw that broke the camel's back. I've been having way more fun not playing DDO than playing it, so yeah, I've stopped playing. If this gets removed I might start hopping on again to do my daily gold roll at least but until then, greener pastures.

The client already runs like a turd with electrical wires attached to it, and now you're adding this? Nope. I'm not uninstalling b/c I LOVE this game. I shall wait and hope that sense returns to Turbine.

I don't trust the gov't as it is, and you expect me to trust you with that kind of EULA? Hah. You're delusional. Give us a proper safety net.

EDIT: I caved. I have a boner for this game and the knowledge to control the traffic on my computer as I see fit. I still don't trust you Turbine. *makes significant glances*

The fact that there are a bunch of people upset over this and your not concerned in the least (and attempting to mitigate other peoples' concerns) should be more concerning to you.

They were told on Lama that this was a poor decision. It went thru. They shouldn't be any amount of surprised it's getting this amount of negative attn. Especially when their previous peer-to-peer third party program was hijacked after it was discontinued and it took them long after it had been hijacked to tell people to uninstall.

It all comes down to trust. People don't trust Turbine and their decision since many have been questionable at best. Turbine is known for saying one thing and doing another and occasionally bait-and-switch tactics. While the peer-to-peer may be off now, there is nothing stopping them from turning it one once this has faded a bit and never even thinking about informing us (in fact they don't have to according to Akamai's and Turbines own EULA and TOS). That's happened too. The Offer Wall, to Pando to now this, their 3rd party program decisions have been ****-poor. That's a fact no matter how you want to spin it.

And to justify it by saying that "All these huge companies use it, it's not a problem" is a poor justification and reaching for something that really isn't there.

    8. not because of this a-commie program, but because they require me to have an internet connection. There's all kinds of crazy things on the internet and it simply cannot be trusted.

I'm going to stick to my ham-radio for my D&D fix.

    Default dsabled that sucker

I went in to Windows Firewall, and created two new rules (one for inbound traffic, one for outbound traffic), which block any and everything the program may or may not try to do-- it's locked down tight. I went ahead and modified the two rules they had installed with the update too-- changed them from "allow incoming" to "blocked". I expect those two to be changed by the program/Turbine without notice, but my two manually-installed rules ought to override those.

We shall see what we shall see-- I haven't tried loging in yet. It may be time to get a refund for my VIP from Turbine. I paid for my bandwidth-- not Turbine. They do not get to use it as they see fit (as the EULA that Akami clearly states). Until and if Turbine and/or Akami is willing to offset my costs of bandwith, by **paying** me? It will remain blocked.

I also disabled the autostart, (msconfig) but apparently that's temporary at best.

    We shall see.

Edit: I was able to log-in successfully, with Akamicrap blocked by my firewall. I'll experiment with deleting/uninstalling the files, then setting the permissions on the installer folder to "shields up Scotty" which will deny them future installations. (basically set the folder to read-only, and remove all permissions except for admin-- do not allow system access. It'll lock-down the folder such that nothing can be written to it by anyone/anything.)

If you still want to play the game you can just remove the akamai registry entry and kill the processes.
