Default DDO Shuts Down in 2013?

I recall someone posting that Turbine will lose the license to use D&D trademarked stuff in a couple years, and theefore be unable to keep operaing this game.

I can't find that post anymore but have been wondering about it ever since....was that a fact or just someone trolling?

middle of 2015 turbine loses the ability to operate DDO.
but that being said, there was just a sealed settlement and we dont know what was in that agreement. If there was no changes, then turbine would stop all development/support around the middle/end of 2014

Also typically when a company's use of a license expires both companies involved renegotiate the terms of their agreement. Just because the license expires in 2015 doesn't mean the game will shut down. If the game is still profitable to Wizards of the Coast I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to keep it going. That being said 2015 is a few years away so everyone one should just enjoy the game for now.

They will just probably change name to Dragons in Dungeons Online, or something, change couple of spell/monsters names, places names etc, if they won't get new licence.

Eh, they'd have to scrap a whole lot of stuff that isn't in the SRD.

Basically, they'd lose the rights to the entire setting. That means no Stormreach, Gianthold, Shavarath, or any other distinctive location. It also means no warforged and artificers. Product identity monsters such as mind flayers and beholders would have to be removed.

Losing the rights would indeed make it practically impossible to operate the game anymore, but as has been said, license terms can be renegotiated.

Or *gasp*, maybe they'd have to update. Pathfinder Online.

Nah, add hands to beholders and rename then into eyorthords, give WF fingers, make them look little different and rename to robots or toasters, remane Stormreach to Tempestkeep etc, basically change all names and looks of trademarked places/monsters/spells, and poof! It no longer D&D!

3yrs from now? who actually knows? I started playing SWG when it first started and what an awesome it was back then...before the "Combat Upgrade" but that's about to close down.

We have to bear in mind that DDO is coming up 6yrs old, yes, its recent reincarnation might have revitalized it financialy, but you can't ever think that it is immortal.

I started playing MMO's at Ultime online, then EQ, then, EQ2, then DDO, then SWG, then WoW (from Vanilla) and back to DDO again. I hated the original DDO, it was awful - (it was nice to go back to the smugglers cove though) what i'm saying is that every game has its own life cycle, and as much as i hate to admit it, i think ddo is on its way out.

I still think that DDO has THE best combat and character creation system for an MMO and i'd like to see something similar in the near future (SWTOR is a massive no no) lets see what happens.

Been playig D&D since the basic set got released in the red box...'83, '84?
