    Default why

I would not recommend taking the ranger levels - if you need a caster level take one of Wizard or cleric or bard

One of the really nice things about AA is that you don't have to take ranger levels at all. So If you take AA as a ranger you've only taken 6 levels of it and are losing out on the more powerful aspects of AA later in the game. From the ddowiki:
Arcane Archer: You gain access to the Arcane Archer enhancement tree. (The Elf: Arcane Archer tree uses your total character level instead of Ranger level, but advances Core Abilities at a slower rate. You cannot spend action points in both the Ranger: Arcane Archer and Elf: Arcane Archer trees.)
You need to click the Accept button before you can select the Arcane Archer (Elf) tree

I currently am leveling the following aa splashes

Rogue/AA she can disable every trap/lock she has been set to in game
Cleric/AA RS can heal with the best of them, but usually stays back and fires off arrows
SpellSinging Bard/AA hagglebot that heals and is very effective bowlady
Warchanting Bard/AA a nice self healing hagglebot
    Monk/Fighter/AA

If you'd like I could work some of my builds out in the character planner - I usually don't rely on tomes and haven't found the need for them with these builds. I usually craft a couple of bows to start them out - like Pure Good/fire PG/acid PG/lightning pg/frost - they can be used at lvl 7.

    Seems like very silly advice.

6 levels of ranger nets a lot of very useful bonus feats, it's not taken for the caster levels, though rams might is quite nice.

@ the op, about the only thing i'd advise is consider reaching 21dex to pick up the feat combat archery, I'd get that instead of blinding speed.

You may find this somewhat easier to do if you choose elf as your race.

Skip WF:Ranged, it's no longer necessary; I suggest squeezing in GTWF somewhere. Also, Combat Archery is now WAI, so you may want consider finding a way to bump up base DEX to 21 and take it at lvl 27 instead of Blinding Speed. I'd also want Stunning Fist, but I'm not sure what to drop for it. I would also bump up base CHA a little for higher saves; get some more mileage outta Div Grace (and hopefully Div Might).

Thanks for the advice guys, its much appreciated. We went with a Bladeforged version that a friend built, I can't post the build plan as he hasn't given me permission as of yet. I will look at getting combat archery in there though.
The build should be sufficient for my wife to have some ranged fun with and she still has a 20+ heart to use if she feels its not working out for her.

    Thanks again
