    Default Switched to Comcast, Can not connect to server

    I haven't played in about a year. The new content intrigued me, how ever I can't seem to log into the server. The game tries 20 times then I get the error message. I have reinstalled the game, disabled and uninstalled firewalls all with no luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am running windows 7.

    Not really sure what that means.

    This did not work for me; ddo- and, apparently, only ddo- is causing my wireless adapter to balk. I'm getting the exact same symptoms as Aenima- log in alright and select world, then 20 instances of "Searching for logon server... (1 of 20)"

    After 20 tries, an error message pops up: "Connection failed: Client timed out the connection."

    I then lose all internet connections until I go down and troubleshoot the problem, which results in the following message: "Problems found: The default gateway is not available. Fixed." and I get my services back, except for ddo.

    I should note that other MMOs seem to work just fine (At least, Champions Online booted up and loaded just fine, and The Secret World also seems to be working properly)- this problem appears to be specific to Turbine's DDO (I have not attempted to load LOTRO, so I don't know if the problem exists there as well).

    Also, when I went into the hosts file, there were only two lines that did not start with '#', both of them blank. I deleted them, but I doubt they had any real effect on the file at all.

    EDIT: Oh yes, the problem appears to be something to do with my wireless adapter- I have to use a Netgear Wireless-N Dual Band adapter because my PC is too far from my router to be connected with an actual ethernet cable. My laptop's wireless (built in) loads and plays the game just fine, but my PC (which is a significantly better, hardier, more robust gaming platform) simply will not work. Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

    Isn't Comcast using a proxy by default ?

    I know some ISP have a default setup through a proxy server to Quicken the Internet [ basically makes the pages load faster by caching the most requested ones in a server ].

    Proxies are not configured to handle UDP packets ( and usually they filter them out, thus the 20 tries ).

    You can also try to ping the gls server.

    open a command prompt and type :

    ping gls.ddo.com

    ( you stop it by Ctrl-C. )

    Along the way makes sure that you are pinging the right server : 74.201.102.13.
    If you are not pinging the right server as hinted above check the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    and remove/comment ( with a # ) any line that is not commented out.

    The 20 retry can also comes from Symantec antivirus, I have a laptop where I have to disable all the Symantec services to be able to play DDO. ( otherwise I get the 20 retry )
    On G-Land : Flavilandile, Blacklock, Yaelle, Millishande, Larilandile, Gildalinde, Tenalafel, and many other...

    I should probably have mentioned that while my symptoms appear to be the same, I am not using ComCast. My ISP is Frontier, which is moderately to extremely poor, and I'm using a DSL connection rather than a cable connection.

    That said, I followed your advice;

    pinging gls.ddo.com [74.201.102.13] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 74.201.102.13: bytes=32 time=111ms TTL=240
    Reply from 74.201.102.13: bytes=32 time=110ms TTL=240
    Reply from 74.201.102.13: bytes=32 time=111ms TTL=240
    Reply from 74.201.102.13: bytes=32 time=111ms TTL=240

    Ping statistics for 74.201.102.13:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss>,
    Approximate round trip time in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 110ms, Maximum = 111ms, Average = 110ms
    As I said, the problem seems to lie somewhere in my Netgear Wireless connection device, but I'm not sure where or why, since it worked just fine before my break (about 2 weeks ago) and now it doesn't. I can tether my PC to my iPhone and play that way, but I'm concerned that the data usage that way may be obscene and, besides that, experiments with tethering in the past have shown it to be a less than fully satisfactory method of achieving online functionality (although the iPhone is a significant improvement over the Motorola Citrus I used to have, so I don't know...)

    Anything changed during these two weeks ?

    Is an Ethernet Cable between your PC and the Router/Box an option ( at least to test/confirm it's the wireless bit ) ?

    If there's one thing in DDO that has been optimized and that works well it's network usage. You can play on a 56K modem line without any problem, so the data usage is relatively low.
    I know that in Europe some of us used to play from a 3G subscription and never hit the limit of their data usage. ( And nowadays most modern smartphone have a way to look at this usage, so you can have a fair idea of what DDO uses )
