Renewal could only be used on allies, unless you are in EA.
EA 1st core:
Celestial destiny: Passive Bonus: Gain 50 sp. Each additional level of Exalted Angel grants 50 sp and +1 to Cleric, Paladin and Favored Soul caster levels. The Renewal ability can now target yourself instead of only allies.
As for alternatives - boulder, tsunami (targeting is a nightmare on this though), unearthly reactions, brace for impact (if fleshie), primal scream... lots of possibilities
I'm a long long way from getting the extra slot. But when I do, this is something I want to try out. Any specific targeting tips other than line them up?
My typical attack pattern looks some chain missiles, jump into the middle of the pack and energy burst, hard target something and kobold jump backwards while casting wild shot (so the shots pass through the mob). At that point, the mobs should be starting to move towards me... do I need to back up a bit to get them into more of a straight line?
To the OP: Why? If you have cocoon, you have healing. Renewal can't be used on yourself outside EA, cocoon handles emergencies far better than renewal (renewal doesn't tick till 2 seconds after you apply it... cocoon gets a double tick at the start). Renewal is a great maintenance heal, but as a sorc.. your job is pre-emptive damage prevention (nuke em till they glow!). If you have force spell power/crits, then toss boulder is a fantastic choice.

Targeting works like Imp Precise Shot. Gather up a few, string them out in a line, target the last guy and then cast. It will pass through the string doing damage to all and stops at the last guy targeted. The spell is boosted by Force and Cold. It uses Wis as the save. If something saves, the cold damage is negated as well as the knockdown. Be careful though, the gust of water will blow out friendly spells like Disco and Clouds.
Does around 600 blunt/600cold on a non-crit and around 1200each on a crit.
