Default Help improve this F2P/Beginner friendly Wraith Tempest EK build

    Wraith Tempest Knight

If you only have 28 pt builds, drop dex by 2 and you'll have 2 extra points to put wherever you want.
If you want more survivability, you can replace Blinding Speed at lv 27 with epic reflex.
This build only raises Search, DD and OL. A new player unfamiliar with the game content could do a similar build with drow or elf and skip Tier 4 Tempest for racial "Nothing is Hidden"
For F2P realism, I only added +3 tomes at lv 18, only Con is necessary if you want epic toughness, otherwise a F2P Beginner could do very well without any tomes at all.

My head hurts to much to create a feat plan, but the basics..

Power attack. 5 damage is worth a lot.
TWF line. I'd slot it earlier. GTWF at 24? 60% offhand until 24 is painful. Even if it's 80% offhand at level 20, it's still painful - you do want it as high as possible, esp as a new player being forced into elite groups or soloing. At the very least, GTWF at 21.

With your current plan, you can take the +3 con tome at level 20 at the latest... and I wouldn't expect a new player to have that many +3's by 18, unless they got lucky with drops/friends/whatever.

I personally find whirlwind attack to be not worth it in general, but even less so as TWF (unless unarmed). As for combat expertise, kill it with fire.
Minor note, swap FE: Elemental for FE: Undead. Lots of undead, even a few at endgame. Elementals dry up. Mostly. I can only remember a few quests that had a decent amount of elementals.. I can't even list all the ones with an army of undead.

As far as enhancements go, I'm not sold on t5 EK, but I'm sure it would work for people that don't like scrolling buffs.

Especially for 28pt first life melee players I wouldn't dump STR that much. You'll want to collect more items for alts or next life and don't get encumbered to fast. At least this is what I wanted in my first life. Even in my second one where I didn't raise STR at creation it's pretty limiting on carrying stuff. And it's again a caster life, so there's no need to carry various types of weapons, shields and armor, which a melee focused toon probably would.

I had no tomes in my first life, because tomes in the AH were astronomic overprized (starting at 300k for +1 tomes or 30-40 Astral Shards in the other AH) for a first lifer with no platinum mule or enough TP and I also didn't find a single usable tome but only upgrade ones which I couldn't benefit from.

I'm with Pala-forged Gish type builds are buckets of fun but unfortunately EK just isn't worth spending more than a few if any points in it luckily gishes worked just fine before EK existed.

    As for your build:

    - Combat Expertise is a good option as contrary to popular belief AC still functions just fine it just can't make you invincible anymore

    - Blinding Speed is less important to an arcane melee since you can self cast I'd really recommend going Epic Reflexes especially since you have evasion

    - I'd actually recommend going elf for this build...Elves get a bunch of great boosts when fighting with rapiers (finessable) and have a few other nice things for both melees and wizards, although if your looking for toughness dwarfs get a nice juicy bonus with constitution and various enhancements that help if your looking for a tough cookie. I don't really see how halfling fits in (as much as i LOVE halflings)

    - Drop Mental toughness and its improved brother...taking MT at early levels helps but than always swap it out later for something more useful when your SP level gets to a manageable level (around lvl 10ish)

    - Despite being a meleedon't forget your Meta's (ie. Maximize) your DCs are going to be low but there's plenty of no save/no SR spells such as Ice Storm.

    A few suggestions:
    • Don't dump STR; getting Enfeebled to helplessness sucks, esp. early on. Plus how else will you carry all your filthy lucre?
    • Don't dump STR; even on a TWF DEX-based toon, Power Atk/Cleave/GC are still way better than Whirlwind Atk & its pre-reqs.
    • Don't dump STR if you're playing anything with Bow STR+Manyshot and you don't have either elven Grace or Ninja w/Zen Archery.
    • . . . did I mention don't dump STR?

Get a Str item...even 10 Str is more than enough.

I agree not having a cleave like ability would suck...if the OP wasn't picking up the two EK abilities that work exactly like cleaves and actually Whirlwind is better than Cleave and Great Cleave in every way

Uh...clearly I'm missing something when did the OP say he was making an archer

    Yep it's getting really annoying

Don't worry OP some people are still stuck on the old way of doing things before DDO embraced the glorious flexibility that changing stat functions around allows.

The two main problems with CE are you're sacrificing DPS to use it instead of Power Atk or Precision; and spell cooldowns are tripled while it's active. [I think SLAs are unaffected, but what SLAs does this build have?] That makes it a bad choice for any melee-caster, IMHO.

Eldritch Strike / Tempest have 15 / 30 sec cooldowns and chew up SPs every time you use them; Cleave & GC CDs are 5 secs. ea. and cost you nothing to use.

I'll bite: why is Whirlwind, which chews up 5 feats for a single slow AoE atk, better than PA/CL/GC, which only uses 3 feats, grants 2 AoEs, and adds +5 dmg to every hit? Sure, it's a full 360-degree atk, but how often is one totally surrounded like that?
Uh...clearly I'm missing something when did the OP say he was making an archer
He didn't, but why let all those ranged feats go to waste? Otherwise might as well stop at rgr 3 for +10% offhand and spend those 3 lvls on something more useful. EDIT: maybe rog 5 / rgr 3 / wiz 12 - TWF Knife Spec w/wraith form.

Sometimes the old ways are still the best ways.

OP might want to consider a staff build instead of TWF, which has more synergies with a Cleave-centric approach: rog 5 / wiz 12 to start, with the last 3 levels open to round things out (e.g., wiz 15 for lvl 7 & 8 spells and extra meta feat, ftr splash for extra feats & haste boost, druid splash for Ram's Might, Shillelagh, Vengeful Hunter).

No, it is not. 10 base, +3 tome and a +str item would be safer. Think necro II. Think ray of enfeebling.

Aside from the cooldowns.. and the fact whirlwind is broken.

No point not using manyshot if you have it. Unless you're building purely for a theme, of course.

I'm keeping Mental Toughness and Improved Mental Toughness since I want a build that uses spell points for buffs and death aura. I wanted a TWF build at first and still looking for suggestions on how to make a decent one with 12 levels of wizard, I could dump a bit more int and raise dex. How would you make this a TWF build instead, I would like to keep Wraith form.

So I took the OP's original build concept - DEX-based TWF rgr / wiz in wraith form - and adapted it to elf. This lets me pick up elven Grace & Skill, Feywild Tap (EDIT: this hopefully makes up for losing the SPs from dropping the Mental Toughnesses); I also bulked up archery a lot (PBS, IC:Ranged, IPS, CA).

I've been underwhelmed by EK; nevertheless, I saved 16 APs to spend in it. That gets you the first 3 core enhs, Imp Mage Armor & Shield, Martial Training (+2% doublestrike), and Wand&Scroll Mastery. I didn't invest anything into ASF reduction, on the presumption you can negate it just thru gear; but if necessary, shift some APs into Arcane Fluidity and/or EK enhs.

Should hit at least 18% Dodge: 3% Dodge feat + 3% elven Skill + 10% Dodge item + 2% Mobility item. Between that, 50% concealment (Displacement), 35% incorp in wraith form w/Imp Shrouding, and decent AC (knock on wood), shouldn't get hit that often.

One comment I forgot to make: if you started STR 13 INT 12, you could start with Power Atk instead of waiting until lvl 9; it would also let you pick up Cleave & GC instead of, say, Dodge & Precision, giving you an AoE melee DPS option as well as letting you pick up Lay Waste & Momentum Swing. [Technically you only need Cleave, but GC is good enough to be worth it, too.] But that would cost you 23 skill pts and this build is starved for pts already - not to mention losing 3% Dodge and Precision on ranged atks - so it's definitely a tradeoff.

I ran some sort of Eldritch Knight build last life (Wizard 12/Cleric 7/Fighter 1 which had too much cleric). I would consider going WF mainly for self-healing. That and you could go Adamantine Plating. I had no ASF by the end and an AC of around 63.
Some things I found that could help you:
    • Power Attack is amazing
    • Eldritch Strike, Eldritch Tempest, Cleave, and Great Cleave are fantastic together and probably my favorite thing in the build
    • A lot of Eldritch Knight is Sword-and-board, so the road to Tenser's and Eldritch Tempest can be rough for a THF (Like what I did) or a TWF (Like you)
    • If you are not going Strength based, be sure to at least get enough strength to get Power Attack. It's good to have a good reflex, as well. Taming the Flames + Low reflex save + no resists, flame shield, or protection from energy = sad day.
    • I haven't seen a lot of Whirlwind Attacks, so I applaud you for that.

At least, that's what I found with my build. I hope that helps

OP wants Evasion, so Addy Body is out. He also doesn't have WF unlocked, or my first suggestion would've been to drop PM and be a magic robot instead.

BTW, something else I forgot to mention: elven Aerenal Grace lets you sub DEX to dmg for longswords & rapiers, but not to-hit; and since neither is considered light weapons, Tempest DEX-to-hit doesn't apply either. So if you find yourself having trouble hitting things in melee, you may want to swap one of the less important feats for Finesse.
