Default Is "Turbine" going to make a DDO2?

Was wondering if Turbine was making a DDO2 and don't say there already is "Neverwinter" because that is so far from D&D it isn't even funny, it's just not. And the fact that Cryptic sux.

Would be nice to see an up to date version, graphics and code wise.

Given their record I have 2 things to say.

And if they ignore that and go for it anyway.
“Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”

I think we'll see Half-Life 3 and the next (good) Duke Nukem first.

    Unhappy

While I would love there to be a new, improved DDO with code that was easy to update, I would only love it pre-Enhancement Pass / separate Epic TR, etc. (NGE). Since Turbine is going forward with the NGE I can only assume that any DDO2 developed by Turbine would be more of the same. So unfortunately, no thanks.

Wasn't this a major fail when Everquest tried to do the same?

    Evolution is better than revolution.

They should continue to build off what they have which is a really great product.

I've learned to be very careful about such wishes. The grass sure does look greener on the other side of the fence but if you really want to climb over, I'd wear hip waders just to be on the safe side.

I've been in software development and related fields for a very long time and I'm very familiar with the concepts of revising and enhancing what is versus developing something new. Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it. Then, not only do you have to wait to get it, pay a lot more for it, risk there might be a major problem during development (and not just technical), but you might just find yourself back in the same relative place you were before wanting the same things you do now.

Think of it this way, making something new is just an extreme version of updating what already is. Yes, its true, there are usually limitations on how easy it is to fix and update current stuff laid down by what already is, but you also have a great deal of accomplishment to draw on. And, its already in place and functional. As easy as something new sounds at first, you then also have to lay that new groundwork, form new arrangements, purchase, understand and implement new tools in an updated technical environment, find appropriate people power to do the job.....its a long list and a decision not to be taken lightly.

tl;dr yeah makin' a new game sure looks easy out here from the peanut gallery, trust me, it aint that simple.

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride,
If turnips were swords I’d have one by my side.
If ‘ifs’ and ‘ands’ were pots and pans
There would be no need for tinker’s hands!

    If wishes were horses
    Beggars would ride:
    If turnips were bayonets
I would wear one by my side

If they wanted to hemorrhage money, fragment the community and fragment their resources then DDO2 would be a great idea.

It would be much better if they did overhauls of DDO, like with the upcoming AI one.

Graphics should be their absolute last priority; they're already pretty decent and graphicswhoring is what's killing the industry.

From a business perspective it makes sense to not update graphics. More people have computers with low end video cards than those with good ones. Updating graphics will drastically limit your potential customers, it's amazing how many game companies fail at understanding this. If I was going to design a new game I'd go to walmart pick up a 300.00 laptop and tell the designers that computer was to be the min system reqs, and it had to play well at those reqs. Better systems should be able to load higher res textures ext but it should never be required.

Well, it is possible to disable some graphics options.

At any rate, Turbine should at least fix the whole "DDO does not launch correctly unless it's installed on an SSD or has been cached by Windows" thing.

Yeah but fixing bugs wasn't what the op asked for.

    Dear Turbine,

Please don't make DDO2. Just work on fixing DDO1.

    Sincerely,

    Everyone

Whenever I've thought about/wished for a DDO2, I guess I've always more envisioned a cleaned up version of what we have, an "ADDO" (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Online) if you will. From my limited (ok, more like non-existant) technical understanding and stuff I've heard here & there, many of the bugs and issues plaguing this game stem from aged "spaghetti" code interacting with newer stuff improperly. Things that were supposed to be "commented out" weren't, things of that nature.

Would a fresh recompiling (right term?) of streamlined/only functional code minus all the old & unused/useless "noodles" be reasonably feasible and helpful? Or just another (or worse bigger!) opportunity to break more than what gets fixed?
I would still like to see... Something that tests character versatility and player adaptability rather than character focus strength and quest knowledge.
I play the quests for the content of the quests not just as an XP/min merry-go-round.
Actual play experience is worth infinitely more than theorycrafting...

    What features would you want?

We already have all the player races in the main game plus some. We have almost all the prestige classes. There are a few options not present but to be honest those were used seldom (like druids being able to turn into sharks), if ever. There are many activities one may pursue, including PvP to determine whose build is best, crafting, socializing, questing, just enjoying the fine art work, and exploring.

I am not sure what you feel needs to be added. The developers are slowly adding new adventures.

The game is mostly stable. Yes, there are bugs but I really suspect that many are due to the underlying database application and other application program interfaces. These change from version to version and the versions change with the operating systems. They can also be due to drivers that may become invalid with operating system (OS) releases. Microsoft is not known for building backwards compatibility with its releases. Indeed Microsoft's apparent position is that if you have an older computer you should be forced to upgrade and abandon your software that you may regularly use or in the case of games enjoy, so that you keep buying there bigger and more bloated system.

In almost 30 years of programming, I can honestly state I only saw two "complete" rewrites go smoothly. For one rewrite it was due to OS change where the unlying software all changed necessitating changes in internal program data structures and calls. We wrote middle-ware software to allow the data calls to all remain the same. We also wrote programs to process all the current applications and change the data structures to using different structures that maintained the previous data representations. The second rewrite was by some of the finest programmers I new throughout my career. They put in an average of 105 hours per week (YES, I know how dumb that was, FIST fights broke out over the most minor of things just because everyone was tired). We however had no choice. Our changes were mandated by Congress with a date specified for implementation by Congress. The other three rewrites resulted in months of errors, slow processing, and customer dissatisfaction resulting in loss of customers and employees.

All I can say for myself, if their were a DDO2, it must migrate all my characters with all current enhancements and equipment. If it did not, I would not play. If they closed down DDO, I would not play it. I like the current game even with its bugs.

To be honest, I think the priority for DDO work should be network speed (stop the rubberbanding, I get killed because I am one place on the screen and another in server memory), server and database speed, bugs (at least the old ones), and then new content.

Turbine changes code all the time to "improve" it. Matter of fact, the next major DDO 2 is scheduled for August release.

You can look forward to that.

2006 DDO was released. 2009 F2P was released. March 2012, MoTU released.

Turbine seems to be on a three year cycle of re-engineering the game. Some of that re-engineering is very painful to go through for the player base. Very painful. Very, very painful. Some of that re-engineering is actually causes a rage quit mechanism in the player base.

    DDO2?

I'm moreso surprised Turbine announced a new game doing DC League of Legends style. Wonder if Batman fights himself stole any of our devs.

I totally thought WB acquired Turbine to do what they've done before... take a licensed property, give it some stuffs and put a microtransaction store on the side of it.

Now if only WB owned some property that SCREAMED: make me a social MMO with a wearable accessory store to just pile gold... err $$$ into WB's coffers with more depth than the current webMMO's of that sort.

Then again... maybe Harry Potter fanaticism has passed its peak or maybe the game licensing is tied up.

The Collector's Edition comes with a gyroscopic wand/mouse. This thing writes itself.
