    Default Better Green Bags

Here's a challenge for you devs. In this screenshot you can see my:

    • Bag o' Epic Seals
    • Bag o' Epic Shards
    • 2 bags of Epic Scrolls
    • Bag o' Shroud Ingredients
    • Challenge Ingredients Bag

Now, can you tell me, at a glance, which one is which? I bet you can't guess one right on the first try.

We really need some sort of bag labeling system. Maybe not full on bag naming, but there's a few things you could do instead. Allow us to color-code our bags (with a selector much like we get for picking eye/skin/lip color at character creation). Let us mark bags with a collection of symbols viewable on the icon. You could even have the mouse-over display a small list of the largest quantities of items stored in that bag.

There's a few other things that are missing from this archaic inventory system.

    • The ability to "dump" an entire bag into my inventory or into a different bag
    • The ability to move an item stack from one bag to another without having to put it into my inventory first
    • Auto-sort options. I should be able to sort my green bags by ingredient type, the chain it originates from, the quantity of it, or alphabetically
    • The ability to tell a bag to only auto-gather ingredients that it's already holding/of the same type as the ingredients as it's holding

While we're on the subject of bags, why are the buyable bags Exclusive? To prevent people from, idk, managing their inventory as effectively? It only adds an extra step where I have to keep any extra small bags in my bank and swap them out for the one I'm carrying. Completely superfluous, just sayin'.

    Sincerely,
someone who spent 4 hours this week sorting out his green bag ingredients across 6 toons

    No but Yes.

Labeling of bags is a band-aid solution to a larger problem that has a much better solution.

    Get rid of bags entirely.

Give players a "bag" tab in their inventory. This tab holds all ingredients, collectibles, etc. and it's account wide for all unbound and bta items. Allow for items to be sorted by category, alphabetical, adventure pack, etc. within their different sections. It could also store those hirelings in the OP's bank if desired. No need to use the TR cache or shared bank at all for bags ever again. This also frees up multiple backpack slots. For the Turbine marketeers, this can be monetized and sold in the store easily enough. Those that have already have store purchased bags can use them to apply a discount to the new system so their purchases don't go to waste.

I agree that simply labeling them might be much less work, but I offer a much better long term solution.

    Bag Labeling = Good +1

the problem is that there is zero provisions anywhere in the game for us adding custom labels to anything so I'm sure it would take hundreds of hours to code it in and therefore, we wont get it.

Everything else, Too much potential for disaster/exploits. not worth it.

I have a more in depth answer and some examples, but i am typing on my lunch break from my phone so it will have to wait.

there is already provision for custom labels in the game: player and pets names. A simple variable attached to a game object and player-defined. The reason i said colors or symbols is because (i think) "star=yes" or "color=#ffff00" takes us less code and space than "uservar='sack of challenge stuff'" for the 20-30 green bags a player may own. As far as exploits, sad but true. But if Turbine didnt add things to the game based on the potential for exploits, update 1-20 would never have happened.

At the very least, they could let us buy Gargantuan green bags that are BtA, rather than BtC.
All on Thelanis: Archenpaul Sixblade (Epic Triple Completionist), Archernicus Thornwood, Crestellin Moonwood, Gregorovic Redcloak, Jaklomeo Evermug, Jarladdin Nalfesne, Jonathraxius Kane, and Praetoreus Silvershield (Heroic Triple Completionist, Epic Triple Completionist.)

Leader of Guinness Knights (Level 165), which is (since June 2021) a two-man, father-son guild.

    Cogito ergo summopere periculosus.

Such a space would have to be exponentially bigger than a single green bag. Which may not sound bad, but at least as of now bags are a "finite" storage solution and thus easier to manage from a server perspective. Another way of thinking about it is, think about the lag you get when browsing cannith crafting machine recipes or when you put an item onto a cannith crafting altar. That's the kind of lag you'd have to look forward to every time you opened your inventory. And unlike the crafting halls, it would be accessible anywhere. It's not a bad idea in theory, and similar to one I've turned over in my brain, but DDO has proven to have poor data management already. Small, simple changes like a new settings UI for bags seem to be easier for debugging and long term health of the game.

To me this fails to address any of the real problems (especially for those of us that don't attempt the self defeating and OCD solution of putting different ingredients into different bags). The real problems are:
    1) wayyyyyyyy too many ingredients in the game, and exponentially so for collectibles (99% of which are useless)
    2) way too little storage space
    3) no sort functions

    I'd be much happier if:
    1) they stopped using the ingredient method, but I understand this won't happen
    2) they made bigger bags, I'm thinking stacks of 50000, with 10000 different items
    3) add an interface similar to the auction house, with categories and search functionality
this would allow you to select and search just cannith crafting ingredients, just mabar items, just greensteel ingredients, just epic item ingredients, etc
hopefully this also allows for re-use of existing (working) code
    4) make everything go in the bag (larger sizes of dragon shards, planar shards, draconic runes, adamantine ore, etc), and preferably just 1 bag type since the interface would work best with that
