This just underscores how stupid Turbine is for requiring antiquated code.
Yeah, I'm not entirely surprised it didn't work outside of Steam, if only because the Steam version also downloads the libraries needed and does other stuff as well (*cough*Steam overlay*coughcough*).

I used the link over at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...v=vs.110).aspx to ensure it worked. And it did for the Steam version, at least.

I'm not having a problem getting the game to install under Windows 8.1, I just can't seem to get it to launch. I've downloaded it from turbine and through steam, both give me the same results when I launch it. The launcher comes up and allows me to login. I see my last connected on there, the server list, etc. I select my server and connect... the launcher goes away... and then nothing happens. I've tried installing .NET1.1 from Microsoft, I've tried changing the .NET version in the TurbineInvoker.exe.config... same results. No errors or anything. Nothing happens.

    Thoughts or suggestions?

Are you changing one of the version numbers or both? I changed both to "v4.0" (note the letter v before the version number) and made sure I had all my quotes and stuff before saving.

It seems like people are still having problems with Windows 8.1 and the DDO client. We keep losing players and prospective players because of this issue. Does anyone know if Turbine has acknowledged the problem and is also working on a way to resolve it?
