Cool A Three sided Dice in real life vs /roll 1d3 in this game.

In this game typing /roll d3 gives each number a 1 in 3 chance.

In real life this is a coin with the edge being the 3rd side. How many times would the 3rd side happen if you tossed the coin in the air and let it hit a surface, without tampering with how it lands?

    Probably never.

Interesting and wild stuff to think about.

    Have a nice day.

What if we made that 3rd side of the coin bigger so it had the same Diameter as the other 2 sides. Now it is a column.

By the way did I ever mention I had stitches in my head 5 times and played football when I was younger. I got my head hit a lot. Also I grew up around the time that leaded gasoline was still being used. I think about and say the most f'd up stuff sometimes.

    I used to use a d6, 1-2=1, 3-4=2, 5-6=3. But sometime's I'd be odd and bring out the d12, 1-4=1, 5-8=2, 9-12=3. I was always looking for a chance to roll the d12.

A coin is an unfair 3-sided die, yes. You could also use your shoe as an unfair 4-sided die (bottom down, top down, left side/right side down). I don't really recommend either.

They do make 3-sided dice now; they look sort of like a football with three flat sides, and the points all rounded so it won't land on end. D6 was always my method of choice for a D3, though.

I have some fair d16s, which are basically the same model as d10s. Any even number of sides isn't too hard to actually make. I have some mildly unfair d7s, too. And somewhere I have a d6 that was printed with 5s on all sides. I can't even imagine why that was useful to anyone.

Sounds like a promotional item for some company where 5's were important somehow.

Gotta give some love to the dodecahedron. It's the dual of the more iconic icosahedron, did you know?

I never much liked the d20, tbh. Felt a bit too wishy-washy. Too many sides; too subtle in the angles.
However, the d12 is a solid beast; not so angular as the d6, but still when you roll it, you know there's a solid resolution on which face it has come to rest.

Because its a lot easier to notice when you always roll a 6, than when you always roll a 5?

If you have a greatsword, swap that in for your damage rolls, and you're doing 1d6+5 instead of 2d6 base die

Yes. In addition to those bipolar dice for any even number, and the fairly well known d4s, d12s, d20s, and d30s, there are also possible fair d24s, d48s, d60s, and d120s.The article at http://www.fantasylibrary.com/lounge/diceprop.htm has a complete mathematical explanation for the math geeks among us, and a nice chart at the bottom that the non-math-geeks can skip straight to.

That's the same way we used to do it.

I have a 14 sided dice. Came from a football game someone got me from a garage sale.

WHAT WHAT? 14 sides?!?! It wont roll equally.

Well actually it does... as well as you can. It's a (normal d30 sized) sphere with planed surfaces. 14 of them.

I sanded it down to get rid of the football icons. Carved numbers 1 to 14 into it and painted. Back in my minis painting days. Used to try to convince DM's to let me craft d14 base damage weapons.

Mmmm.... leaded gasoline and lead minis.

d6s with 5s on all sides used to (probably still do) come in novelty packs along with a d6 that had all 2s and 6s. They would always roll either 7 or 11. You'd have to be pretty blind (or drunk) not to spot them tho. The sets usually came with a pair of normal d6s that were otherwise identically colored.

For a skillcheck, Shadowrun 4 uses a number of D6 equal to your skill score plus the corresponding ability score plus any modifiers. Any 5 or 6 you roll is considered a success. Although you'd need more than one.
