    Default Build Request: Solo Jack-of-all-trades(ish)

I've been away from the game for a while. I have a couple of level 20 characters from a while ago, but nothing epic; challenges and warforged not being immune to disease any more and the like are new to me from browsing the forums and ddowiki. I was thinking of just starting again on another server to get used to it all by working my way up through the levels.

Ideally, as my flagship character on a new server, this new character would be a crafter, a trapper, a hagglebot and a viable solo-er, as I solo almost exclusively. In fact, if I've missed anything that I might find useful, please point that out! My impression is that this newfangled artificer class ought to be able to take care of most of that; I was also thinking some other class (maybe a Bard or a Ranger) with a Rogue splash could do it too. How advantageous would being a Cannith dragonmarked artificer be for crafting? (I like this idea of only having to spend one feat on dragonmarks, and crafting looks interesting.)

There are some great builds out there. The first that springs to mind based on your criteria is the juggernaut. Unfortunately it's an advanced build that is fairly equipment and stat (starting + tome) intensive, so it's maybe not the perfect build for a first life toon without any epic experience. I haven't personally tried any of them, but this guy has some great ideas for more new player friendly builds that are self sufficient, and most of them can trap:

In particular I like the hunter's knife, journeyman's walking stick, and exalted blade builds. Also, any artificer or arti splash build would probably work to satisfy most of your criteria (arti/rogue build would give you evasion, trapping, crafting, self healing, repeater damage, etc).

Honestly, I would go for a pure WF Artificer...

    - Great self-healing
    - Trap skills
    - Awesome UMD
    - Blade Barrier!
    - Decent DPS (always use Rune Arm)
    - Incredible versatility being able to use clickies as a level 20 spell (Archanotechnician capstone)
    - 5 bonus feats
    - Semi-useful pet
    - Really easy to level

    Good luck!

For crafting, a pure human artificer w/Making DM is your best choice; they get +20 to crafting levels by lvl 20. They're obviously trappers and can solo fairly well, too. They do get Haggle as a class skill, but no special bonuses to it; and since CHA is usually a dump stat on an arty, they've not ideal for hagglebots. But if you have a shared bank, it's pretty easy (if a bit cumbersome) to make a dedicated hagglebot to handle your transactions.

Definitely go Arti. It is my current favorite class.

I have a pure human arti as I don't like and won't play warforged. I picked construct essence as a feat for self healing with repair and and very self sustainable. My arti also has dragonmarks, though the ones of passage for DD.

The ones for crafting are great to get your crafter up there, as a full arti with dragonmarks you will get 20 crafting levels at 20th level for free.

My arti is int based and has a haggle higher than my rogue did. And I don't try for haggle bots anymore either. Arti's are skill points a plenty. They are excellent trappers though you will lack evasion. Which you can solve with a splash of Monk or Rogue if you really want it or You could also go Shadowdancer for ED, but I found the ranged version of shadow dancer sucks to get shadow charges which most all the high tier abilities. However in my first pass (first life which my arti is still on) I eventually found out that with the insightful reflexes feats, it turned out my arti had higher average reflex saves than my rogue.

Artis do great damage, have super excellent CC with Tactical Detontation.

So it can easily take care of all your requirements for a solo build.

    Thanks for the advice, everyone!

It seems pretty clear from what you've said that I can do what I want with an artificer, so I've gone ahead and made him (human and marked for crafting).
