    Eh perhaps there's some difference in what is meant by "bank holiday"

    In the US a Bank holiday is literally a day that most of us work on, but the banks are closed, so they can use our money without providing service or allowing access to just deposited funds for an extra 24 hour period (i.e. they make a lot of money with our money with no overhead). Columbus day is a good example.

    (I'm not putting this here for sympathy or to complain, but just to add perspective about stereotyping a given culture or nation-state, but I work 7 days a week, and I do not get any vacation. If I want time off I work ahead, if I can.)

    (One has to do what one has to do to manage life.)

    (The USA is way behind many developed nations in family leave, single payer health care, vacation time, minimum wage, and a whole variety of things. I'm sadly convinced that we're en-route to becoming a third world country because of moneyed-power interests controlling our economy and daily life.)

    Its great we have MMOs like DDO to life a fantasy life in and escape eveything, as long as we can continue to afford to play 'em. If things get too bad, it will also mean trouble for MMO's like DDO.

    I wonder if I could get medicare to cover DOO VIP subscriptions as a mental health treatment...

    That's exactly what we'll do - make OUR minds up.

    And you can be sure there's nothing inevitable about it whatsoever. Other than the fact we get to decide.

    The only whinging going on right now is coming from the unionists precisely because of that lack of inevitability.

    It's actually only six for most people.

    * New Year's Day
    * Memorial Day
    * Independence Day
    * Labor Day
    * Thanksgiving Day
    * Christmas Day

    It's up to individual companies to observe any (or all) of the remaining five:

    * Dr. Martin Luther King Day is observed with a day off for government employees. Many other employers don't necessarily follow suit and according to a survey from the Bloomberg Bureau of National Affairs only about
    * Inauguration Day Observed only by federal government employees in Washington, D.C., and the border counties of Maryland and Virginia unless it falls on a Saturday.
    * Presidents' Day too is only a mandatory day off for federal employees.
    * Columbus Day is only commemorated by federal and state offices, the US postal service and (in many states) public schools.
    * Veterans Day similarly is only a day off for government employees.

    Trust me, the lack of time people have off in the US is particularly obvious if you come from a country like me where most get 22+ days of vacation, unlimited sick time and 13 paid public (bank) holidays.
    You almost got it all right. One exception.

    Presidents' Day has no effect on federal employees, because it only exists as a state holiday in various states. The federal holiday that occurs on the same day as, and pre-exists, Presidents' Day is called Washington's Birthday.

    Okay, maybe another small thing. Many places (schools, businesses, etc.) trade Veteran's Day for the Friday after Thanksgiving to provide for a four-day weekend.

    Okay, I'm done now.

    The reality was very different to that atrocity of a movie!

    Astonishingly England and Ireland seem to have a better relationship these days than England and Scotland - Considering the Irish have extremely valid RECENT reasons to loathe us {and some not so valid ones too of course} I find this hard to comprehend.

    As far as I'm concerned it may be time for England&Wales and Scotland to go their own ways - I just don't see a vote in Scotland getting the majority it requires.

    Great Britain will cease to Exist for me on the Day Scotland leaves - The United Kingdom will stay around so long as N.Ireland remain.
    Serbia & Montenegro provide the naming convention for when {not if. When - Ireland WILL Re-Unite sometime this Century I have no doubt} it becomes simply England & Wales.

    The UK has the fewest public holidays in the EU. If you want public holidays go live in France, Spain or Italy.

    The most amusing thing I saw concerning Scots independence was a poll in which it appeared that a result of Scots leaving the UK was MORE popular in England than it was in Scotland.
    Alec went unusually silent on the subject.

    Yeah, that was funny, short-sighted xenophobia alive and well in the Home Counties as per - good ol' UKIP - hopefullly you'll get your wish! I mean, if it's REALLY and truly what you want, and all. Pity you don't get a say though, eh?

    Only gonna be one poll that matters in this - just like for the Scottish Parliament, and just like in the last Scottish elections when the SNP won a majority in a PR system specifically designed to stop anyone getting just that! 40% of the electorate still to declare - but yeah, let's just go with "inevitable". If it helps you sleep at night. LOL!

    As for the nonsense about Braveheart not being historically accurate - I'm sure you are right (though what it's got to do with next year's referendum is beyond me, seems bit peurile if that's what you actually think we are gonna be voting on). I mean it pales by comparison to all the Robin-Hood etc.'s we've seen over the years, eh? Each one claiming to be historically accurate, no? My god, we've even just had a BBC "historical" drama series about the War of the Roses with WORKING WITHCRAFT in it. Brilliant! ROFL.

    And anti-English, maybe so, they were "the baddies" in it after all. Seems it was a WORLDWIDE success, commerciallly and critically though - won an oscar or 2 even, IIRC. Funny, that...
