I have been playing this game since just after launch and I have had to talk to a GM aprox. 10 times.
I have played quite a bit of other MMO-s and it's usually worth it to call a GM/admin if you get stuck somewhere or a bug stops you from getting xp.

However in the case of DDO, I compltely agree with you. The problem was that I didn't know this beforehand and I did try to get help some 5-6 times.

Most of what I've seen that appears as lag has been either a modem issue (ADSL retraining) or an internet issue - lost packets, out of sequence returns perhaps, and other assorted internet weirdness. There have been a few cases where I'm pretty sure the instance I/we were playing in crashed and kicked us out... but I play from Australia, with sometimes only 500k download speed and 500ms ping times (320ms idle) and apart from slight issues due to the time it takes to get a response from the server, it's rarely as bad as what you obviously get.

A couple of weeks ago there was this... https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...August-3rd-5th - an issue with routing traffic through certain nodes in the US, which rendered DDO unplayable to many (but not to this Aussie!) It's got to be worth performing a tracert to something in the same room (like oh let's say www.ddo.com) and seeing how reliable each of the steps is when you get lag. The connection icon in the client gives a half decent indication on how your experience may be, but you get little detail from it beyond the current throughput, current ping time, and packet loss.

I must say while reading the forums in the last hour or two I've had a couple of cases where a page load has easily taken over 30 seconds, while most only take a few - and these don't appear to be related to my ISP. Unfortunately these can be very hard to track down, especially when it's sporadic and only affecting a small portion of the internet.

I get the feeling there is an ongoing network problem somewhere that is simply too complex for people who need to know to find, and too minor in the eyes of some people who do know to bother with.

Anyway, time to see what the lag's like now!

    Default Client Crashes?

Is anyone getting any client crashes with this update? I have repeatedly crashed before I could get to my server screen after logging in.

I'm running the Mac Beta Client. I downloaded it on Monday and everything has been working fine up until this morning :-(

Since the service time is delayed another 1 hour I been surfing the forums trying to understand the enhancement system, etc.

BUT THIS POST which I quote really got me.

With the new update --- I now get really bad LAG. Bad in that I get lag even walking around in the city areas in Harbour etc... which I find incredible. Initially I though I was just having a bad network for a day or so but now I see alot of this as well.

Hi...are you on cannith? I think you're in my guild.

I don't think the lag issues have anything to do with your machine. My PC is over 3 years old and was not a top end PC even when I first bought it. I rarely have the kind of lag that I hear about on these forums. I don't doubt it exists, it just doesn't hit me very much. I do reboot my client anytime I DC a character (even one time).

There must be some major differences in the various rounting from one location to another that is affecting lag.

DDO doesn't seem to unload any areas after you leave them. Play for a few hours and the game is using >3gb ram. Even at first load it is usually using over 1gb with semi-high graphics settings... but it never unloads anything, so moving between areas in the game lags it more and more each time you enter any new area.

Don't expect a fix any time soon though, theres nothing in it to sell (Asteral Unload Shards??? Menace of the Lag expansion???).
Why to fix? Let's make another expansion to get MONEY! YAY!

    P. S. I hate Astral Shards notification in right lower corner.

Yes I too have the Mac Beta and after this mornings HOT FIX it now crashes right after I select my world and it begins to load.
Guess we have to wait for Turbine to come out with a new Mac Beta version.

    <SNIP>
I have two laptops in my house that my wife and I play DDO on.

Mine is a 2nd gen i5 with crappy NVIDIA GT 540M 1MB graphics. I run at 1366x720 (Laptop's native resolution) and Ultra High graphics setting in DDO. I have run into NONE of the lag issues on this machine.

My wife has a 2nd gen i7 with NVIDIA GT 580M 2MB graphics. She used to run 1900x1200 (Laptop's native resolution) and Ultra High graphics setting in DDO.

With the new update, especially in the re-worked areas (Harbor, Wheloon docks, and Eveningstar), there is a lot of additional tidbits of graphics. My wife was a bit laggy in these areas, but was un-playable in the Wheloon explorer area. How did I fix it? Turn down her graphics from ultra high to high, but left her at 1900x1200 because that was what she was used to.

SO... try turning down either your resolution or your graphics settings. If that doesn't work, try a trace route to the DDO server you're playing on.

Additionally, on Thelanis there are more people on than I've seen in MONTHS. The additional server load definitely takes its toll, but it's really only noticeable in highly populated areas during peak play time for me (I get rubber-bandy when the instance initially loads)

If none of the above works, make sure you are running a 64-bit version of Windows. 32-bit Windows causes many many issues due to the fact that it only sees 4 MB of RAM,
THIS IS IMPORTANT: It doesn't matter how much RAM over 4 MB you cram into a machine running 32-bit Windows. 32-bit Windows only sees 4 MB and usually only 2.8MB - 3.2MB are usable once the OS loads. DDO can and will consume ALL of it.

I don't have a lot of time to play and wasting 1 hour of that to wait for a GM is a bit too much. I am sure you can agree with this.
Speaking as someone with some experience from the other end of the service than you (not at turbine), GMs generally answer tickets in the order in which they are received, regardless of server.

They work normal type shifts, with 24 hour coverage, but different staffing levels for higher traffic. When there are fewer tickets, they get answered faster. Many times that players don't get service as fast as they are expecting on time-sensitive issues it is due to them not placing them in the right category. If you're stuck, make sure you put it under 'stuck'. Time-sensitive issues (at least at the place I have worked) get put at the front of the line if you have them categorized correctly.

The DDO Game Servers will be brought down on Wednesday, August 21st from 7:00 - 10:00 AM Eastern (-4 GMT) for a hotfix. Thanks for your patience, and we'll see you back in the game soon!

The notes for the hotfix are as follows:

    • Fixed an issue where characters could enter the Hall of Heroes before completing a reincarnation.
    • Fixed an issue that could cause characters to have too much Heroic level experience, which could cause the reincarnation process to fail.
    • Fixed an issue in the quest Army of Shadow where Marthir would not resume fighting after players kill Nightcrawler.
Im having really bad lag issues since the "fix" after the shadow fell add on..... I've never had the issue before its to be honest its kind of annoying .. ive tried everything from allowing morethings on my firewall reseting both router and modem and resting comp amny times. Default Not really. Turbine is not at fault here but rather their service provider.

Would you disconnect your telephone or internet services just because your local service went down?
Turbine is easy to blame and I understand it is highly frustrating but they are not the cause. Just ride out the storm. There's always something else one can do in the interim.
