Actually it is quite easy to get such a mistake. I've had it default bid at over 100 times the current bid before - I haven't seen a rhyme or reason other than once you type in a bid one over, it properly adjusts as you go through. Joyfully if you hit bid without looking at that number, you're stuck. I've sadly won an item at a mis-click mark-up before

But, yeah... AH prices have skyrocketed since I've last played. So maybe it's real.
