How do I turn off this game?

Yes, its a serious question.

You see, each time when I try to use /quit or alt F4, the game freezes and crashes for 20-120 minutes. Everytime.
Same with failed character log in attempt.
If the bar is still at 0% for 10 minutes, I already know it won't load even if I go out for an hour.
In the past, I was able to use task manager, and automatically kill dndclient.exe but now I'm getting error saying 'Acces denied' or 'This is invaild operation for this process'.

Any ideas?

BTW, I'm using windows 8 64bit.

Task manager, although usually if you wait long enough it will eventually close on its own.

Are your permissions set up to allow ending the task? Are you telling DDO to quit and then ending the task? Or are you trying to end task it immediately?

I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, with UAC disabled, and I have no issues killing the process. Though if I don't kill the process, it will sit there for a long time de-allocating really small chunks of memory until it finally closes.

this is probably this first acronym I learned. brs = big red switch. back in the day (xt world, early 1980's) the power supply was on the right hand side and had a big red switch. aka, kill the power.

honestly, I have had to go through the log off process (main menu -> logoff) a few times before actually logging off. are you in a hurry, shut the computer down. are you trying to get out of a sticky situation? die like the rest.

Not the best of ideas. Especially for older hardware. Modern hard drives use the momentum left in the spinning platters after the motor loses power to generate enough electricity to move the heads to a safe location before locking them down. Older hard drives had to be manually told to do this. If not done the drive heads would be allowed to come to a rest directly on top of the platters when power was lost.

it was mostly sarcasm. Twenty years of IT work i see how impatient people are. Back in the day, we did simply turn the PC off, game or not. Now, people get nervous when the computer has to "think" before showing a response. it could be bad programming, hard drive access, video, keyboard, usb device, virus, anti-virus, temperature of any particular device, life span of any particular device, mojo, humidity, dust, bugs (the actual creepy crawly type), power variances, lack of the awareness of the passage of time, or medication (or lack) of the user.

Please, if you are in a hurry, learn to wait. don't pull the power unless you absolutely think you have to. It's your equipment, take care of it. but if you are at work, look for a "boss" key program or usb device.

Obvious question but...have you tried rebooting? I know sometimes I get permission errors etc. for whatever reason, and rebooting seems to reset everything back so that Windows knows who's the boss again

Also, it sounds kinda like you may have an incompletely closed process from a previous DDO instance, that might be why its telling you its an invalid process - its confused, trying to close an instance that already got shut down but not cleaned out.

No hardware damage is possible if you hit the power button on the front of your computer, or use the operating system 'shut down' command.

I play in a windowed mode. What I do - I click the X button (Close) in the top right corner repeatedly (20-30 times), after a while a small white message box appears that Windows something... whatever. At that point, I only need a few more clicks on the X button and and DDO closes.

Vellrad, I used to have the same problem as you do, except for my waiting times were shorter - lets say 10 minutes max. But yeah, when loading, the game was unkillable and stuff, then it eventually killed itself and I had to start it again, then it loaded in like 2 minutes thanks to memory leak,

All these problems dissapeared when I started using DDO Preloader made by Wanessa (Diky Wanesso!). Hope that helps,

Check to see if you have any updated drivers for your install. This sounds distinctly like a driver issue. A driver resource is opened, you Alt F4 out, which forces the O/S to clean up any open resources, many of whom are attached to drivers. It enters a driver, and never comes back.

Not 100% sure about Windows 8 as I am not using it at this point (I think the major update there was the implementation of the Metro interface which is almost like an alternative GUI display interface), but usually from one release of Windows to the next on a specific processor platform (32-bit, 64-bit) many of the major internals remain unchanged. What does change, however, are the drivers.

I'm surprised nobody has said this yet-

While in task manager, on the bottom left corner it says "Show Processes from All Users" - clicking this button gives task manager administrative privileges and allows you to kill any process that won't blow up your computer.
