If you want to use the Lighting the Candle enhancement and still gain ki on hit, you are forced into using one of a handful of items. That or use Sun stance. And who wants to do that?

Frozen Tunic
Oremi's Necklace
Alchemist's Pendant
Vestments of the Sun Soul
Spider-spun Caparison
Is there anything I'm missing? I guess that is a few options, but an augment option would be awesome.
To be fair, you don't necessarily have to use enhanced ki with Lighting the Candle to see a benefit. Like you mention sun stance is an option and makes sense as there is a push toward the fire element in general in the tree. Also any critical hit will add extra ki which you can still gain while under the effects of Lighting the Candle. For quarterstaff users, especially those with the extra crit range enhancement from Henshin mystic, you can potentially get enough ki from just critical hits to keep you going. It is dependent on your class goals and I see how handwrap users would be at a disadvantage, but quarterstaff users can get by just fine in many situations.
On topic, an augment for enhanced ki would be a nice option. I'm sure many players would like to see it in a yellow slot, but I fear Turbine would make this a red augment, severely cutting down on it's usefulness. For it to mean anything, I'd like to see it a yellow augment or possibly even colorless, though that is probably pushing it.

The way I think the devs look at it is
Red = offensive power (melee and spellpower)
Blue = defensive power (AC, PRR, Saves)
Yellow = utility power (resists, etc.)
Colorless = stat buffs with some exceptions
To me I can't see how enhanced ki generation could fall into blue. I'm not saying it couldn't happen. I just don't see it under the current dev guidelines.

To add to this, you can also generate additional ki on critical hits by using the Way of the Elegant Crane animal form. Or, to passively regenerate ki automatically when your health is below 50%, use the Way of the Tenacious Badger form. With the new tree system, any Monk can train these animal forms cheaply through the Mystic enhancement tree.
I'm cool with an Enhanced Ki gem, but it would probably get a ML12 for balance's sake.

More options for enhanced ki would be nice, atm I'm thinking of dropping a min2 hp greensteel on my monk to pick up alchemist's pendant (or even Oremi set) just to get it, but I think as an augment it would be too strong. Throwing away my 1d10 elemental gem if it was a red slot would be a no brainer for me and putting it on blue/yellow/colorless is just too easy (although my build is using a lot of ki via stunning fist, kukan-do, shadow fade and 10k stars, and I'm also an abundant step addict).
