I loved his stuff. I was very sad to hear when he first announced he had cancer and I know that his publisher was working at breakneck speed so that they could publish his latest before he passed away but from what I remember it seems that it was not to be.
Such a powerful writer. Exploring concepts and ethical discussions that we are going to *have* to have in our futures as technology advances. Fearless in setting characters in huge spaces of place and time.
My favourites were 'Player of Games' and 'Look to Windward'.

I'd just read my first Banks novel maybe 2 months ago. Stonemouth. Really an engrossing book.
