Thumbs up AD&D 2nd Edition RuleBook - NEW EDITIONS!

Thought I'd break my hiatus to bring y'all the following, really cool, news.

Wizards of the Coast is reprinting the 2nd Edition rulebooks for D&D. For many, this was the defining ruleset, or at least the one that got them hooked on the game in the first place. Want em? Here's the details and how to find a store selling em...

And in making this thread, I am forcibly reminded at just how bad these new forums blow.

Such a disappointment on so many levels. Exiting stage-left once again. Too good news not to share - but the forums are too gut-wrenchingly awful to stick around for.

    Stay well, forum peeps!

    Read as:

(WotC) We can't make a good tabletop RPG to save our bankbook, so let's reprint and sell the old ones that we have rights to!
(Board members) Yeah, we'll save on dev costs too!

And yes, I may get them..

Interesting but not ever going to give WOTC another dime and I always liked 1st ed better even though I most likely played more 2nd ed. I have moved on to a better pnp game the new Hackmaster better game made by more friendly and accessible people who are real gamers and not money grabers.

On a side note yah the fourms are awful and its hard to justify posting anything even something as interesting as you did even though its just a money grab by WOTC it is interesting.

Now if they start reprinting D&D ( boxes, the real ones, not the dummy one they produced last year ) , The Gazetteers and Hollow World, and all the B, X, CM, M, IM adventures that might be interesting
( as well as the DA... I still need DA1 for my collection )
On G-Land : Flavilandile, Blacklock, Yaelle, Millishande, Larilandile, Gildalinde, Tenalafel, and many other...

    I never played 2nd edition. Just Basic, Expert, AD&D, 3.0, 3.5, 4e..

A house mix of 3.0 and 3.5 actually was the most enjoyable for me..

They made something after 2nd ed!!!!!!!!!!! Only ever and still do DM 2nd ed, the best by far. What makes an enjoyable pnp game is a good dm and great players.
Just awestruck, whether it be a Dragon flying overhead Stormreach, that glowing character who just zoomed in'n'out of the Pub or that I can drink a Beholder under the table and best of all rescuing Damsels in distress.

    Character. Alivef was 1 x heroic completionist now I need Alchemist (+I have few more heroic pl's) 1 x epic completionist, 1 iconic Shadar Kai x 3. Gnome+Drow x3 racial pl's.

I always thought AD&D was actually referred to as "2nd Edition" or 2.0 nowadays....

Nope, you had D&D ( Boxes, Basic, Expert, ... ), AD&D First Edition ( DMG, PHB, Fiend Folio, Deities & Demigods [With Chtulhu Mythos Stuff, Conan Gods, .... well lots of Copyrighted material ] ), AD&D2 ( DMG, PHB, Tome of Magic, Deities & Demigods renamed, without copyrighted stuff ... ).

    I went D&D, ADD2, 3.0, 3.5... and stopped there. ( At the same time I was going : MERP & Rolemaster/Spacemaster and quite a few games. )

Now if only they would bring back the old old style Citadel Miniatures before warhammer and the stoopid "chaos" cartoony influences with huge hands and feet...

It's a toss up between 1st ed AD&D and 2nd ed AD&D as the best D&D system, the only difference between the two was weapon specialization which I liked so I'll go with 2nd Ed

I also have fond memories of playing the Dark Sun (Wake of the Ravager?) computer game. It was critically bugged and couldn't be completed but the game world was very interesting, Thrikheen, Muul, psionics etc.

    Thanks for the info Memnir!

I still play in a 2nd ed. AD&D P&P game once a week. Geez, it's been going on for how many decades now? I feel so old...

Weapon Specialization first appeared in Gygax's Unearthed Arcana, which was an expansion of 1e.

2nd Edition also added Non-Weapon Proficiencies (aka "Skills"), some of the rules from the Dungeoneers and Wilderness Survival Guides, removed Monk as a core class, made Bard a core class, and de-eviled the Monster Manuals (i.e. got rid of demons, devils, and nudity.) I liked how some of the rules and spells had better clarity in 2e and dragons and giants were much more formidable foes... but, in general, I preferred 1e and only used 2e as a sort of supplement.

LOL This has made my son's day since he's moved out of state last year and no longer has access to Mom's vast bookshelves of 2nd ed resources, but I still have access. 2nd ed is still my favorite. I tried 3 and 3.5, and just didn't care for them, and no one in my area has 4 so never bothered, so my personal groups are 2nd ed since I'm usually the dm, or Pathfinder if my son is (although he also runs 2nd ed to get mom to play more, I think he misses me since moving!).
