    Default The Whirling Wolf and Other Ultimate Druid Melee Builds

    Whirling Wolf

    The first build is called the Whirling Wolf:

    Supposedly with update 15, they added animations for animals that use the whirling attack, but I have yet to see such a build.

    This build uses sword & board with light armor in winter wolf form. Accordingly, it is Natures Warrior and Stalwart Defender.

    Some Perks:
    -Cleave and Great Cleave
    -Whirlwind Attack
    -Natural Fighting x 3
    -Improved Shield Mastery

    Rogue Wolf

    The third build is called the Rogue Wolf:

    As one might expect, it is a rogue in winter wolf form. However, you may wish to pop out of animal form to do traps for the +2 difference in int. In any case, this build evolved out of my attempt to take advantage of the shifting rake enhancement, which automatically triggers a sunder effect when you use a bluff attack. In theory, this should also apply to the improved feint feat, which makes an arc of bluff attacks in front of the player. However, I have not yet tested this.

    This build uses sword & board with light armor in winter wolf form.

    This is a tactical tank version of the Whirling Wolf. It could also be a whirling bear, even though that doesn't have as nice of a ring to it. I opted for wolf since bear form with a tank/tactical build seems too one-sided to me.

    Default Whirling Wolf/Bear Tank

    This is a tactical tank version of the Whirling Wolf. It could also be a whirling bear, even though that doesn't have as nice of a ring to it. I opted for wolf since bear form with a tank/tactical build seems to one-sided to me.

    I know that tanks are nearly extinct. However, I came up with this build while being frustrated that you need nine levels of druid to open up the natural fighting feats. This prevents you from nice 8/12 splits with druid and fighter or monk for example. However, I realized that the 8/12 split would work on a more defensive and tactical build, which could take wolf or bear form while using sword and board.

    I really enjoy shapeshifted combat even though it has lots of really stupid mechanics on the devs' part (attacks considered spells, weapon effects, etc)

    Here's another Natural Born Killer. This one is a vanilla melee build with a focus on flexibility. You can use either wolf or bear form. It uses light armor with sword & board.

    Default So far, so good.

    I'm playing all three builds in the OP. The are currently at levels 12, 13, 10, respectively.

    The Natural Born Killer III build is especially strong, clearly beyond merely flavor, but I have no complaints regarding the other builds.

    I know the Whirling Wolf will be tons of fun once I have the whirling attack, even if it makes some small compromises to get it. All the extra dodge bonus from the prerequisite feats for whirling attack will be nice too.

    Likewise, the Rogue Wolf will be especially fun when I get improved feint.

    These builds are so far so fun and effective that I've been playing them nearly non-stop.

    I'm currently at level 15 with the Natural Born Killer. The split is 2M/3F/10D. I'm debating whether to go with the 2M/6F/12D or the 2M/8F/10D build, and am leaning toward the former -- aka Natural Born Killer V. I think that having Nature's Warrior II, some extra spells slots, and dire bear form is worth losing one feat.

    I'm not much of a zerger, but this build is very solid and has no problem being on the front line. I'm typically first or second in the kills, for what little that is worth. (I'm waiting for the day they tally up damage done rather than merely kills.)

    I think that the Whirling Wolf build is also very good, and is at level 12 -- 2M/10D -- pretty much indistinguishable from the Natural Born Killer V. I'll think about it a little more, but as it stands, the Whirling Wolf split will remain 2M/8F/10D since the build benefits from the extra feat.

    One of the coolest things I've discovered on the Natural Born Killer is that at level 15, with only 10 levels of druid, my pet dog is still pretty awesome. The trick is to keep him alive by maxing cunning wolf, yelp (bluff), hamstring, and takedown rather than increasing any damage. Your pet needs to be stealthy and tactical to survive at higher levels. Equip him with effects like cursing or paralyzing collar and fearful or fortifying armor. In any case, I was surprised to still find the pet very useful even at level 15.

    One other thing you might want to do on these builds is to take one level of fighter early on -- for example, 2M then 1 or 2F then 10 or 12D -- as this give you full martial weapon proficiency. Weapon proficiency doesn't really matter for the most part since you are mostly in animal form. However, if you need to pop out of animal form to use a wand or perform some backup healing (to avoid the cooldown penalty), then being proficient in any weapon you equip becomes important.

    Lastly, I've started to play the tank build listed above in this thread. More to come.

    Here's an alternative, human version of the Whirling Wolf.

    This build uses sword & board with light armor in winter wolf form. Accordingly, it is Natures Warrior II and Stalwart Defender I.

    Some Perks:

    Here is a bare bones version of the Natural Born Killer w/ access to the Heal spell.

    The build uses light armor w/ sword & board in winter wolf form.

    Default Natural Born Killer V, Whirling Wolf III, and Wolf Tank

    My Natural Born Killer V (NBK) character is currently at level 18. It does considerable damage, so much so that I have to manage agro much like an evoker sorcerer. Don't get me wrong, the NBK has decent AC and hp, far more so than the average sorc. However, if you're not careful, you can easily get this character killed.

    I'll have to get back to you on the Whirling Wolf, but it's been doing great so far. When it gets the whirling attack is when I plan to report again on it. I have opted to go with the Whirling Wolf III build, which is the human variation with 12D/6F/2M.

    Lastly, I have played the Wolf Tank (8D-12F) up to level 10 (2F-8D). Not much to report yet because it's too similar to the other builds at this level, and doing great.

    Druids cannot go lawful good - they must be True Neutral, Lawful Neutral, Chaotic Neutral or Neutral Good.
    Lawful Neutral is required for monk (Lawful requirement), but you can only be one step away from Neutral as a druid.
    Also, Lawful Good doesn't give anything much anyway, if you ask me...

    I've set the enhancements for my NBK and Whirling Wolf under the new system and they are working great. Selecting the new enhancements depends partly on your style but for the most part is common sense. I was particularly happy to see that these builds can now get celerity. Awesome.

    If you take fighter levels earlier in the progression, you may have to switch around feats. I leveled up NBK and Whirling Wolf using the progressions I posted here and had no problems.

    In any case, I apologize, as I am not able to dedicate much time to these builds because I am a grad student starting a new semester and will be quite busy. Not sure if I'll get around to posting updated builds. I guess my disclaimer is that this was mainly a reference post for my own use.
