Default Artificers should have Returning projectiles

Artificers should have Returning projectiles. They're more "arcane" than an Arcane Archer who gets this as a Tier 1 enhancement for arrows.

Did you put that in your survey? If not, I would do so. I think that is a good idea, except they summon bolts for free.

You can summon bolts before entering any dungeon and swap the spell out i think. So its kinda pointless to have returning ammo since a summoned stack is 1000. (I go through 5 stacks of bolt pretty quick with repeater tho)

    Hi,

Despite the fact that you start out disagreeing, you've almost talked yourself into the OP's suggestion by the end of your post. So close.

One stack of summoned bolts takes up no inventory space. Five stacks of bolts do. That is why it would be nice for artificers to have an ability which works like an AA's does.

    Thanks.

Would be better IF the summoned bolts could go into quivers (looking at you poisoned quiver).

What would that change, other than saving inventory space?

Poisoned quiver would already apply its damage.

People do realize that AAs get returning conjured arrows for free right?

This is more about not having to flood our bags with bolts so we don't run out mid fusillade. It's a simple quality of life change for an arcane class. I mean, you can't tell me that we can create a mechanical dog, crazy devices to throw on our off hands, shoot magic from our hands, and can't manage to make a simple missile return to us. Those hippie rangers can do it with minimal arcane training.

Not disagreeing with you, but for the time being I use the House D sturdy bolts. Works out very well for me.

From a gameplay standpoint there's no logical reason why Arcane Archers can summon 100% returning arrows for free and never have to worry about running out of ammo but Artificers can't summon 100% returning Bolts. There's no balancing issue or power creep.

The only reason I can think of that Arties might not have summoning bolts is if the games code doesn't treat bolts the same way as arrows or if they have to be coded that way to work with repeaters.

How about instead of returning bolts, have the Conjure Bolts Spell enchant the X-Bow to generate its own ammo when fired. Thematically this fits better with the Arti abilities I think.

I like this idea. Making this happen or making conjure bolts give you returning arrows would make me happy.

Problem with this would be switching crossbows... and even if that wasn't a problem, I suspect that would count towards the "only one enchantment per weapon" limit. I like the idea of returning bolts, though. Far simpler to implement, especially as the tech is already in the game (with House D returning ammo & AA arrows).

Overcomplicating the solution just leads to no action. Adding the "Returning" quality to any summoned projectile equipped by an Artificer is very simple. The tech is already in the game in the Unyielding Sentinel tree, where Deathblock is applied to any worn armor.

Heh, that'd certainly make a stack of 20 slayer bolts far more useful! Or 20 adam, 20 silver... my arti would lose an entire inventory page and a couple of hotbars lol (which isn't a slam, though i know how it sounds. I like the idea...)

If the goal is simplicity, just add the "returning" property to the summoned bolts item in the DB, rather than tying it to the artificer. If the goal is to buff the Flame Arrow spell, that's a wholly different issue that your proposed fix addresses.

My arguement against making it a weapon effect to generate ammo, is that sounds an awful lot like an imbue, and I'm already using my imbues for insightful damage and deadly.

Ah, i didn't see the "summoned" - and yeah, i agree about putting it on the weapon itself (not to mention, when you switch weapons suddenly you have no ammo... it's one thing to not have Deadly or whatever, but not having ammo... that'd be bad lol)

I have no opposition to this, but I can say I would definitely not want to waste action points on it, I mean seriously, how many good level one spells can you think of to replace your bolt summon? As a capped arti I don't think anything of just casting up bolts as I need them, and I would be seriously peeved if I had to take a returning bolt enhancement just to get to better ones.

However, the bolts into a quiver, yes, very much yes, yes a thousand times.

I believe the idea is to *add* to Conjure Bolts, to make them returning. Nothing with enhancements. Or make it an innate arti thing to make any summoned ammo returning, but I'd be more'n happy with Conjure Bolts conjuring returning bolts at the given level.

I do not see much issue with summon bolts in one of the artificer trees, but just bolts and nothing else.
