Exclamation Loss of Mouse Wheel control - Way overdue for a fix.

Many have reported this bug, I'm sure hundreds of times by now, and it's been present in the game for many years.. Really needs a proper thread in this forum, and a fix as it's a very annoying bug that affects everyone.

What happens is your mouse wheels focus gets stuck in your ingred/gem/soul/collectable bags. Can tell it's this, as after you lose control, if you re open the same bag, the wheel will still work to scroll the bags scrollbar, but nothing else. Additionally, you can occasionally fix it while re-opening the same bag, focusing the search box in it, and spamming backspace while you close it, though this doesn't always fix it.

If you never open them, it wont happen.

If you need to open one, you can sometimes avoid it, if you don't touch the wheel. But not always, sometimes it will just break as soon as you touch any bag.

Only work around is to kill the client and log in again. A simple relog won't even clear it.

Steps to reproduce for devs. 100% reproducable for everyone who has tested. Please try this if you want to see whats happening:
    1. Get any type of bag that uses the standard bag tech that was introduced with collectable bags (thats when this bug was added to the game, was fine prior to the release of them). Collectable, Ingredient, Soul, Gem, Tapestries, etc - anything that uses the same ui all have this issue.
    2. Fill it with many different things so it has a long scroll bar. (mass generating shroud loot may be an easy way to achieve this)
    3. Walk/Teleport to the marketplace
    4. Zone into the desert refuge via Kupper-Nickel
    5. Zone into the Menechtarun, back to zawabis, then back to Menectarun
    6. Open the bag, use your mouse wheel to scroll the contents a bit, type anything into the search box, erase it, scroll a bit, double click an item to remove it, scroll a bit more.
    7. Unfocus the bag by clicking anywhere in the 3d area, then hit esc to close the bag and try to zoom your camera via the mouse wheel.
    8. Likely will be broke, but if not repeat step 6 a few times and it will happen eventually, 100% of the time within 3 tries if done right. (Broke = No view zooming or hotbar scrolling via mousewheel)
    9. Also more likely to happen if your client memory is up over 2gb (memory leak causes further lag and bugs like this. You can quickly achieve this by loading in the desert and back out 3-4 times. Or desert + vale to really get the client maxxed out (3gb on a x64 system).

Some players have reported it happening without opening a bag, but I believe this is just user error. We are required to use bags in this game for so many functions and so often that pretty much everyone will get affected, and not be exactly sure why or when it happened, as they are very commonly used without a second thought.

    Ideal fix:
Mouse wheel never breaks. Focus is not lost or stolen by objects, but instead assigned dynamicly depending on your cursor location.

    Potential easy/lazy fix:
Disable mouse wheel interaction with all bags, but instead enable up/down arrows and page/up down for quick scrolling.

Anyone reading this: If you think this is an annoying bug that should be fixed ASAP, please reply with your experiences. Somewhere around 50 replies they might even attempt to fix it (worked for madstone boots, partially). However PLEASE if your going to try to disclaim my testing, follow the reproduction steps carefully and see that it does indeed happen to you and everyone.
Additionally, if you believe your wheel just broke after X time for no reason.. Try opening any bag you own and scrolling that with the mouse wheel - you might notice that stil works, and it confirms the focus is stuck in there.

I will have to give this a try. I have never ran into this issue. What kind of mouse are you using, and does it have some control panel running in your systray (by your clock)?

I know I am using an intellimouse explorer without using any special control panel or driver.

I have had this happen to me once a week or so for years now, and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether or not I've been in a bag. To be honest, I don't have a clue what causes it, but I know it's not from just being in a bag. It seems completely random.

Once this happens for me, I have to use the arrow zoom on the keyboard, or, like Shade says, close out of the client and re-open it.

Happens to me more often then not whenever i craft anything. Lose all mouse wheel functionality.

If i plan on doing a crafting binge then almost guaranteed, i will be losing my mouse wheel function before i am done.

Its a drag. Restarting client always fixes it but its still a bummer of a bug.

Let's try to nip this train of thought right here - it's not his mouse, it's not a control panel icon. It's the game. period.

I've had it happen randomly, but it is most reproducible following shade's instructions above... and quite annoying.

Just trying to get as much detail as possible, since I haven't ran into this issue in years of playing daily and digging/sifting through large bags often as I craft.

I am not denying its existence or saying it isn't a relevant bug. But the more information known, the better.

If I get a repro, I will fraps it.

I apologize, but there are a few on these forums that default to this immediately upon any conversation about bugs. I am a bit MMO-PTSD.

This particular bug is about the only thing in the game that annoys me more than umd lag and handwrap related issues.

OMG this is soooo annoying! I didn't realize it was related to bags. Thanks for the info!

I thought the bug was due to logging onto too many characters in a session. However, it sounds plausible that the bag was the last thing I was in on the last character, then I log into a new character, who has the default tight zoom that I want to change immediately, and then the bug becomes apparent.

it used to be that i saw people complain about this, but it never happened to me. then for whatever reason it started happening to me. not all the time, but often enough.

it is, indeed, very annoying when it happens.

Mouse wheel also breaks for zooming in and out of 3rd person view after being logged in for about 3 hours. It seems to happen like clock-work and re-logging doesn't help. You have to kill the client to fix. You also can't use the + and - keys to zoom after this point either.

But that still interacts with a bag, so could still be bag-related. Just means it doesn't require active interaction. I just lost mouse-wheel again over the weekend, and had dug an item out of a bag to throw on AH.

It's still a closer causation than we've had for a while.

I know you may say I am doing it wrong; but as soon as I go to enter information into the search box, escape no longer exits the bag.

While crafting, is it when you are wheeling through shards to make, etc, or through bag ingredients?

I tried a few things with the bags open and didn't have a problem.

No your correct, you cant exit like that (another bug).

So I updated the steps to reproduce (you need to click outside the bag, then hit esc).

And guys please, I and many others who confirmed this play this game way too much to not know for certain this is exactly how it works.

Your mouse wheel will NEVER break if you do not own a bag.
This bug did not exist when bags did not exist (yea thats how long ive been playing...)

I can play for 3+ hours and 100% ensure I never have the problem, by not opening a bag. The moment I do, it breaks. It's related to the memory leak yes, but it's not caused directly by it, it's the extra lag generated by it that makes it more likely to happen.

And really, your simply not helping the devs at all or adding ot the discussion by saying "oh mine broke after 3 hours for no reason". Try to think from there perspective, your only adding confusion and nothing useful to the topic.

Everyone uses bags in this game, you may not even realise your using them, but its not really possibly to play this game ,at least at endgame without using one, so you will get affected by it.

Every bug has a reason it happens ,and the reason was carefully explained in the first post.

Ive also updated the repro instructions to ensure they work for all users too.. So if you really want to try to disclaim anything, at least try them first.

Also if you notice your wheel broke after X time playing the game and dont believe it was due to a bag, try opening any bag you own and seeing the wheel still works there. Mine always continues to scroll the bag after its broke everyelse, as whats happening is the focus get trapped in there.
