This is because "pure" +1 or +2 stat tomes have become very rare, so the increased AH prices represent their reduced ingame availability.

I have quite a few ability tomes on one of my pack mules for my many alts. The "library" used to consist of mostly +1 and +2 tomes for a long time, but now it's mostly upgrade tomes (+1 to +2, +2 to +3 etc.). So not only did the drop rate for "pure" stat tomes decrease, they are also required if you want to use the tomes that do drop.

Default For whom the over priced items are

While that is an extreme example, when you look, a lot of things are way over priced.

Then you see people complaining in chat that nothing sells in the AH... hmm I wonder why?

But probably what makes it worse is that some will actually by that over priced stuff and so it continues.

Then of course you couple it with the fact that the game takes a 30 percent cut off the top and you have an epic version of taxation.

    Ok, rant over now.
The auction items appearing over priced are not for those thinking there is something wrong. Those items are for the wealthy end-gamers wanting to save time gathering equipment for low level alternates. I will spent outrageous amounts of imaginary platinum to outfit my new level 4 or reincarnated level 1 with the best gear and get playing now instead of later.
Do you want your share of platinum? Go get it. Take your level 11 with a hireling and farm rares in the Orchard. Auction off those Tome Pages and Shield Fragments from chests. Not high enough level yet? run into Baudry's part 1, grab the mushroom, run out, reset, repeat until you gather a stack of Deadly Fever Blanch to auction for 700 to 1000 platinum each to those that want some Stone of Change buffs. Game currency isn't hard to get. It's just a grind.

While I do auction weapons and other things off.. I am a casual player. I try to at least keep the Plat level around the price the game says it is. For instance a A +something sword worth around 800 plat. I might post 789 or 785 plat. I do make plat..

Not scads of it. Enough that if I am looking for something for my 'toon I might just be able to afford it. I do not deal with shard auction. Using real money in a game that I play as I can and when I can. Makes no sense to me.

Currently my elf 7th level thief is making Plat in the auction. I go in drag out what I can. Post in auction. Work towards next level. Repeat and rinse. **shrugs** The game is my only real way of relaxing at times.

With my loopy work schedule. Never knowing how long I can stay online. It is going to have be this way for a while longer. Currently, I am on a bit more.. But there are literally months when I can not play. So no guilds for me or teaming up with others to run a dungeon.

Still almost 150,000 plat in seven months of play. That is with three months of total time of not playing. Is not bad for a casual player. Or at least I do not think so.

A quick edit.. it is almost 200,000 plat.
