My ASAH Minigame

Objective: My objective is merely to see how many astral shards I can earn without actually purchasing any from the DDO store.


Reason: For personal enjoyment. I like playing arbitrage and investment type games for some reason. And when I first started DDO I used to play the AH game a lot; however, once I maxxed plat (or close enough) on enough characters, the plat game lost its appeal. I played the crafting game until I got to 150/145/145 and could craft whatever I wanted. So since shards are new I thought this might be a fun diversion for a bit. I thought I'd post it for my own reference and to show anyone who is interested that despite what the chicken little's are chirping about, a player doesn't HAVE to spend 'real money' to accumulate shards.


I started with 90 shards before patch 17.1 sent the ASAH and daily dice rolls live. I crunched the five or six astral diamonds I accumulated over the last three years. I think I earned some from the MM achievements. I also got some as an extra from an Otto's Box kit I purchased. I can't remember how much came from which source.


I suppose I technically 'paid' for the shards from the Otto's Box even though I didn't want them or realize it was part of the purchase, but as I said I had a stash of shards in double digits before that purchase. (If anyone remembers how many shards you get from the Otto's Box, please let me know).

My free roll (don't remember the number rolled) results in a combo of some vanilla collectible I don't recall the name of and 2 astral shards. I thought it was an odd reward combo, but I thought the 2 shards were ok.


I looked at all the stuff being sold on the ASAH and it appears people are throwing everything out there to see what sells. Looks a lot like the current AH but with some really crazy prices.


I dig out an Epic (normal) Leaves of the Forest and a Heroic Leaves of the Forest that were collecting dust and I post those. I can't remember the price, but the Epic Leaves sells pretty fast and I get 15 shards from that. I also post a bunch of Cannith shards of potential for 4 AS buyout, some shards of melee alacrity for (I think) 9 shard buyout, and couple of blue bordered BtCoE for single digit buyouts. So I spend 1 shard per post on those.


All in all I think I posted about 15 items just to see what sells. I kept the prices low because I want to slowly build a reserve and I was just going to vendor, crunch, or let the stuff keep collecting dust anyway. I'm also guessing that a lot of people will have a small number of shards they have left over for free as well, and the low prices might actually get them to spend them.

I must have used some shards for something in game before patch 17.1 then. I think I repaired some armor in a quest or something because I know I had at least 25-30 from astral diamonds alone.

I'm counting any source of shards that I don't have to spend TP on. So even MM rewards would count.

Sold Archaic Device for 30 and received +21 shards.

Posted Slaver's Hand, Whisperchain, and Shadowmail. (-3 shards)

Bought EH Skyvault for 15 and flawless white scale for 5 and reposted them. (-22 shards)

Wait...I think that seller got ripped off.

Didn't it work out to about 6 TP/AS? If so, that's 390 TP equivilent for a box that cost 5000 TP. The AS value should have been 850+

Or did my brain melt and I dropped the math?

IIRC, when you open the box you can take a pet certificate or 65 shards.

Sold some stuff haunting my bankspace for a long while but could bring myself to use, up to 362, halfway to my goal of 600. Had a quick look but didnt see anything for good value, not enough time to really get down until the weekend.

Cannot believe someone has 70 k, that sort of number would suggest Turbine is making a killing from the ASAH, and that some people who play DDO have **** loads of money.

As a side point are the shards per server ? cause I have a hole lot of stuff on Khyber when we played there before they moved my Euro trash to Gland.
