What's a fair price for Flawless Red Dragon Scales?

I have some I wish to turn into platinum and I'm torn between the desire to get a good price and the desire to avoid price gouging. I also have immediate financial difficulties to consider. My main Thelanis character desperately needs new gear and the plat just ain't there right now.

Anyway, I have fifteen scales looking for a good home.

On another note why not trade the scale directly for the loot you want? And on that note what items are you looking for?

Well see, that's a thing... Casual player that I am, I really don't know what all I want. Unlike a lot of folks who can whip out a list of gear to perfectly outfit their character, I'm really going on instinct, luck, and trial and error. Lots of error...

Understood but you also have to realize that gear is very fluid in this game. With each new update/expansion we get new gear that forces us to readjust everything.

Since you're not sure what you might need or want I would suggest putting together a list of race, class, and level for each character you have. List out what gear you have now and you think you are lacking.

With 15 scales at your disposal you probably have enough to trade for what you need/want. Changing it into plat just means you're buying off the AH and going to be spending too much.
