    Default Neverwinter Fails D&D Expectations

    D&D Enthusiast's,

Here are some initial thoughts on what I have read and seen. It seems that in NW the group size will be at 5 players (ok, we can adjust) however there are no plans currently for any raid style of play per the developers. The game in and of itself seems to cater more to the younger crowd with the Diablo or WoW looting system ( I predict a lot of grief here). With limited and more structured classes the character customization we have all become used to is taking a major hit for a D&D themed game.

Now don't get me wrong there are some nice things about NW and the fact that it is solely based in The Forgotten Realms is huge to most D&D fans. Turbine really missed the mark when they decided to go with Eberron.

    • For good or ill, many of the Neverwinter community’s biggest pre-beta questions were answered. We know, for instance, that the game will ‘ship’ with only five classes: The Greatsword Fighter, the Guardian Fighter, the Dedicated Cleric, the Trickster Rogue and the Control Wizard.

First, it's Neverwinter Online, not Neverwinter Nights.

Second, it's only in beta a lot can change between now and release.

Finally... Did we really need another thread on this?

Its 4th edition based, though how closely they follow the rules is not really clear.

Pretty sure it was announced to be running on 4E, and the classes released look very 4E.

It's looking fairly close, from what I can tell. And, really, that's 4 classes, not 5--they just decided to break a tree of fighter out into separate classes. It would be like DDO saying that you could choose to play a Palemaster wizard or an Archmage as separate classes, where that decision (and everything directly related to that decision) are locked-in after your initial choice.

    This.

    Two things to remember:
DDO used to be like this: max level is 10, you can only choose 4 enhancements and there are only 2 raids.

NW has potential, in a few years it could possibly surpass what DDO is now. NW was born a drow elf, maybe it will become a xXxDrizzitxXx

You're right once NWO launches it will certainly add more content and functionality and this will improve the game. This is tru for all games to include MMO's. However NWO has stated they have no intention of creating raids which is fine and the direction they are choosing. DDO however for the first 2 + years added new modules to the game every three months religously with a new raid in almost every update sometimes 2 raids.

All negatives for NWO aside, how many people here do you think would be playing it right now if it was available?

Fledgling game is just that & I will be checking it out when it becomes either open beta or public release.

It cant be as boring as GW2, so there is hope.

Many to try it out. The real test is a few months after release.

I'd be playing it, as I'm not playing much DDO anymore.

When I was a kid (10-12) we used to have a huge group like 11 players with kids aged 8-14 and my father as the DM. That was pretty awesome ... and messy.

I dont know, i just watched the "*** is..." review, it looks like a prettier and dumbed down version of DDO. I like DDO and all, and I'm hurting for a fix of D&D right now, but I would totally play this except for the fact my computer wouldnt handle it.

I'm just hoping that Elder Scrolls Online ends up being as amazing as it should be (Skyrim with a world populated by other players, and with more territory to roam).

If you want to compare NW to DDO, i think you should compare it with DDO pre-Velah, thats the only fair comparison. When i look back then, well it has nothing to do with DDO i know today, give NW some time, i know i will

Well it has just been confirmed at their forums, lock boxes will be in the game.
In NWO random loot drops from each mob you kill. Rarely this loot will be in the form of a lock box.
A lock box contains a very special loot drop, some of which has a small chance to drop the top end items in the game. In CO and STO they had a tiny chance to contain the top end ships and vehicles which were only sold in the cash store.

Now the catch: lock boxes can only be opened by buying a key that is sold in the cash shop, the key being a one time use item. Note, you do not know what is in the box until it is opened. I believe the keys sell for around $2 each.

Lockboxes are basically gambling. Similar to DDO's + loot potions. Different mechanism - it's really the same chocolate covered turd..

I spoke with the those in the know, and they said that anything that comes in the boxes will be available elsewhere in the game. So basically, ignore them if its not your vocation.

For me, I'd rather pay for content, but since all content will be free and vanity and other non-essentials will be the bulk of their items for purchase, I'll pick my poison, but it won't be lock boxes.

Negative. DDO currently doesn't have anything like lockboxes. However, Lotro DOES. Only you can also pull keys as well besides buying them out of the store.

DDO's closest thing to lockboxes are direct store items as loot in your name. Nothing extra to buy, and loot gems do not effect your chance of store items at all.

As far as I can remember... DDO is also the only one with breakables dropping stuff as well.

Also expect PW/Cryptic to put "special" lootboxes/grab bags in the store being the only way to get certain cosmetics.
