    Default Low on Memory

In the last 1-2 weeks, I keep getting this Windows Error Message:

    Code:
Close Programs to Prevent Information Loss

Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs:
    dndclient.exe

    <close programs> <cancel>

Windows will only close enough programs to restore needed memory.
Usually after a dozen or more zone-ins, I'll get a crash during one of them. Eveningstar is the main culprit, but that probably has more to do with the fact that I go there a lot.

At the character selection screen, dxdiag gives this:

    Code:

My uneducated guess is that this has something to do with my available memory (4GB) being half of my installed memory (8GB), even though I have a 64 bit OS. I have no idea how to fix that though.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Looks like the effects of a traditional memory leak. The message is shown, when a certain limit of handles on your windows system is exceeded (around 200.000 iirc), meaning a process is hogging ressources, but not releasing them anymore.

I did a bit of research and while the DDO client crashes every few instances changes for everyone I know who is playing, it might also be a network driver issue. E.g., the DELL Wlan manager had a memory leak some time ago and would cause that message when using the network heavily.

Enable the Handels column in the windows task manager. You should be able to see, which process is grabbing the handles

Beyond a possible memory leak, I believe the general rule is the swap file should be about double the physical memory. With 8192 onboard RAM, a swap file of 16384 would be appropriate. Manually setting it prevents Windows from resizing it periodically and improves performance.

After you do that, consider purchasing a ready-boost certified flash drive for even better performance. Windows 7 supports it natively (unlike Vista where things can get iffy with it). MS recommends 3 to 4 times the size of physical RAM, so maybe a 32g drive here using exFAT, as an additional memory cache. With DDO I noticed the improvement immediately on my system.

It used to be the case when memory was expensive compared to disk space, especially on *nix systems.
But nowadays with gigabytes of RAM it's not worth it as both are cheap.
The last time I heard about a recommendation : it was use the same amount as the physical memory.
But Windows has an automatic mechanism for it's swapfile ( pagefile ) that works great ( more or less ) for a home usage, so just letting it do it's job is usually enough.

My uneducated guess is that this has something to do with my available memory (4GB) being half of my installed memory (8GB), even though I have a 64 bit OS. I have no idea how to fix that though.
That is certainly a bit odd. Microsoft have a quite detailed KB article on that topic here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978610

The two bits I'd specifically look for in that article are the Memory Remapping feature in your BIOS, and reseating your memory modules.

I also noticed from your DxDiag that you don't appear to have Service Pack 1 installed; it won't make any difference to your memory of course, but it's worth sticking on anyway

    Thanks for the ideas.

    In order:
I added the handles column to Task Manager. With a character on the ship dndclient.exe is bouncing around 630. Loaded into the harbor, running around 600. House of Rusted Blades, about 590. Internet explorer was using about 700. I'll keep watching and report back if it jumps up any.

I did check the swap file as suggested (page file I assume is another word for it?), and somehow it was set to 0. I changed that to the let Windows adjust the size. So far I haven't gotten the memory warning again, even when running House of Rusted Blades over and over. Dxdiag.txt says this:
    Code:
                 Memory: 8192MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 4088MB RAM
Page File: 3234MB used, 4937MB available
I can only assume that is much better.

Finally I went through the Microsoft KB article. I did update the BIOS, checked MSCONFIG and cleared the Specify Max Memory check box, checked the BIOS for a memory remapping feature and didn't have one, and so on. I chickened out and did not pull the CPU and check for bent pins. I did build this machine myself, so that is a possibility though. Still showing 4GB at the BIOS. I think I'm going to have to get brave and look at those pins.

As for the service pack, I checked the logs and it keeps failing to install. I'm chasing that down to see what is going on.

Glad you've got your memory back!

I had trouble installing installing the service pack as well. It turned out that the drive that has Windows 7 on it must be set as the first boot drive in the BIOS for it to install; I had another drive with FreeBSD on it as the first boot drive. Once I swapped the the order, the service pack went on fine; I then swapped them back and everything was happy.

I notice from your first DxDiag that you've quite a few drives in your computer, so this may be the trouble.

Reseating the memory fixed it. Crisis averted!

    Thanks again for the help.

Oh yeah page file or swap file, same thing.. MS always has to go and upgrade the names of things to make it sound all modern and stuff.. lol. Now if they could just finally do something with TWAIN once and for all..

The other poster's suggestion of reseating the memory, common issue, a lot of PC's get their feathers all ruffled when jarred even slightly.. I've had to do it myself a few times as well.

Glad the info was of help.
