I don't even know what to call this...

Early this morning (or very late last night) I was in Gianthold with my level 15 battle cleric, doing slayers. A level 16 sorcerer joined me after a few minutes and asked if I would mind recalling so he could run with me, as he was new, didn't know his way around, and would probably need healing. I said "no problem" and recalled and then we both stepped back in. He asked if he could have a Deathward and I gave it to him, no problem.

As we were running around I had my aura going, but he kept getting so far away that he would ask for a heal, which I kept giving him. I told him several times that if he stood closer he probably wouldn't need a heal because he'd be in my aura, but he ignored me. I also told him that if he could refrain from tossing a spell at each cluster of mobs until I jumped into the middle of them, he'd have less of them running after him all the time and would therefore need less heals. He said that's the way he plays.

I usually carry a stack of Heroism pots and use them quite liberally. After tossing the sorc a couple of dozen heals, I asked him if he had Greater Heroism, thinking he could give it to me and I could stop chugging pots every five minutes. He said he does have it, but when I asked for it he said he prefers to focus on offensive spellcasting rather than buffs.

I actually stopped and asked if he was serious. He said he was.

I was tempted to tell him that, while it was apparent he needed me for healing, I didn't need him, the feeble scorching rays he kept tossing at the fire giants, or his lousy aggro management. I was also tempted to recall, boot him, and re-enter without a word.

Instead, I (politely) pointed out that I was using my SP for healing him, and buffing him, and it was hardly unreasonable for me to ask for a GH in return. He asked if I "really needed" the GH and I said I don't "need" it, but it is handy to have. Finally, he gave it to me, but was clearly not very happy about it.

I have no idea if this person "stoned" his way to 16 or not, but it certainly is not out of the realm of possibility. He started off politely enough, but clearly didn't like any suggestions at all on my part, even when it limited to simply asking if he could stay close enough to be healed by my aura. The first time I asked him that, he responded with something like, "Why? You can't heal me from there?"

Okay... I just wanted to vent a bit.

I was thinking dumbassery but thats just a word I use for such situations. And Mobrien you have more patience then I could ever try to muster, that person would have never wanted to group with my cleric again lol. I have been known to make people cry

I would of put him on squelch and turned down the volume to ignore voice and just run around doing my own thing ignoring the little piece of vermin until he dropped after dieing without my superior divine magic being used on my own worthy self, or even a lvl one hireling.

i'd probably slow down my pace deliberately and see how well he fares on his own
if he dies, i'll just say he was out of my reach
and if he asked to be rezzed, i'll just say i don't have it prepped 'cause i was solo'ing and didn't need it

in case you haven't noticed, i hate it when people expect others to give them things they want but when others ask them for minor things they'd be a ****** about it

Oh c'mon, you're a healing class, it's your JOB to stand behind me with heals and cures prepped and ready to go on a moment's notice while I do all the damage. Cause, you know, that's what clerics and favored souls are for, healing!

Yes, gods bless that people like you exist OP, they make for the kinder side of gaming. If it were up to the people above and people like me.... ouch.

Kidding aside somewhere between your kindness and our intolerance is a happy medium, where he gets his heals but also gets some tough love and learns the lesson of being self sufficient or at the very least, a lesser burden on the kindness of healers. On my sorc I like to have a ton of offensive spells for all types of encounters, but there are certain spells I keep that are buffs, or I scroll em, either way I am not withholding the very basic buffs. If on my wiz I buff folks to the gills, why would I not at least give the bare minimum buffs on my sorc, after all the SP is far more abundant :P

Just your average selfish player. From his point of view he probably just assumed that since you were so much better than him that it was your responsibility to babysit him while he ran amuck. Why evolve as a player and get better when someone else can do things for you!

I'd have been too busy pulling my jaw up off the floor and shaking off the recent facepalming I'd done to myself to offer any sort of comment to that player. You just can't apply logical conversation to a person like that. The only options are to continue to play with him or remove yourself from the situation. Anything you do to try and prove to him that he may be misguided, such as holding back healing or allowing him to die will just end with him calling you a bad healer. The only way to win is to not play.

I would have perhaps given him an "it's called teamwork" talk but without a definite acknowledgement of his idiocy, that would have been the last Spell point he ever got out of me and as soon as the run was done I'd have dropped him from my group and added him to my friends list (this is NOT a good thing). I quite possibly would have squelched him as well provided he started giving me any flack (likely with one of these). If he was willing to just leave and let be then no squelch.

Thank the Gods we don't see these people very often, I do try to educate them but if they aren't interested in, or capable of, playing nice then they can just solo.
