    Default Spells on level-up

What are the best spells to take with your Wizard at each level-up? Some spells are clearly better than others of the same level, and then there's supplimental scrolls but only for some spells.

What are your favorites? Which do you recommend the most? Are there any major traps that should be avoided?

First priority is any new spells of a level you just obtained, so you have something to fill the new red boxes with.

Second priority is any spell that doesn't have a vendor selling it (presuming you'd actually use the spell, of course...a non-PM would have very little use for death aura). Firewall, Dimension Door, (Lesser) Death Aura, any 9th level spell, etc.

Third priority would be the highest level spell that you could use that wouldn't fit into one of the other categories. Higher level spells cost a hell of a lot more to buy and scribe, you may as well grab them for free if you can.

Fourth would just be filling in empty spots for spells that you haven't gotten around to getting and haven't had any luck in looting.

Well... yeah, that's all a bit self-evident. I mean, you'd have to be pretty bad at the game not to do all of those anyway, at least once you realize that vendor lists are incomplete.

So let me rephrase. What SPECIFIC SPELLS are your favorites? Which SPECIFIC SPELLS do you recommend the most? Are there any SPECIFIC SPELLS that are major traps and should be avoided?

For level-up spells, I prioritize anything listed here:

    http://ddowiki.com/page/The_Rare_Arcane_Scroll_List

Everything else I can easily inscribe from a cheap vendor-bought scroll.

There's no reason not to have almost every single spell in your spell book, at least up to spell level 7. The level 8 & 9 scrolls are sometimes pretty pricey on the AH.

Yep, same idea. What spells you choose to take on level up just doesn't matter. I always take spells on the Rare list above because you can't buy those scrolls. So I'll take off that list first for ones I want (like as a PM you of course *must* choose Death Aura and Burst for example). Once I've taken all I want off the Rare list then it really doesn't matter, I just choose something I don't already have. First thing I do when I can cast a new spell level after leveling up is simply hit up the scroll vendors and buy up everything I want so it really doesn't matter what I take at level up other then off the list above since you can't buy those anywhere.

Once you have taken those on the rare scroll list, its entirely build dependant. Obviously a PM needs the negative energy stuff, an enchanter needs CC spells, and an evoker wants things that go boom.

My tip to all Wizards btw is to buy one of every scroll at the vendor and inscribe it at L1. They will show up automatically as you level so you are never presented with any spell that can be learned from a vendor scroll. Reduces your chance at an unfortunate choice.

Except for L8/9 spells, you will have no difficulty picking up all the spells you cant buy at vendors while levelling.

In my opinion...Bad choices to take as a spell slot...
-Stoneskin i saw as a bad spell selection.. requires special ingredients and is easily repalced with a wand/scroll
-Sleetstorm if you dont have FOM.
-Any summoned monster.. just use scrolls.
-Detect secret doors - get a clickie
-Fear -- runaway monsters cause aggro issues.
-Feather fall - get a static item
    -Tumble - mostly worthless
-Fog cloud - annoying and affects party members
-Spawn Screen - worthless spell, would be situationally usefull if it prevented mobs from spawning like in orchard.
-Foxes cunning/Bears endurance...etc... (includes mass version as well) any of the stat spells are worthless for the level they impact. players should already have better static items. for hirlings/summons use scrolls.
-Heroism - drink a pot, if someone else asks.. tell them to drink a pot..
-Water Breathing - get an item or hold your breath.
    -Fire Trap- subpar damage
    -Symbol of flame-subpar damage
    -Stone to Flesh- scroll it

Spells to make sure you pickup
    Dimension Door
    Firewall
    Eldar's
    Niac's
    Black Dragon Bolt
    Death Aura's

    Check
    http://ddowiki.com/page/Scrolls#Scro...e_from_vendors
And try to pickup these as you level up.

I usually get a port to the portable hole and inscribe all the spells I can get out of there.
That way when I level I see the spells I havent inscribed.
Sucks that the wizard spellbook doesnt show what spells you have inscribed that are above your level.

Well obviously not them lol. If you don't have the cash then just checking the wiki list is as good as you can do.

Getting most spells doesn't really involve any hardship, so there is no harm in having them. Are there bad spells? Sure...the animal stat boosting spells are generally fairly worthless except in super rare situations.

But Firewall is garbage when going against blackbone skeletons. Almost every spell you could possibly use will have a situation where it is pointless to cast it (fighting beholders, if nothing else).
