Could anyone translate the first and second posts to common English? I am getting the general idea, but still not quite sure what the authors meant.

Wow...people need to stop using babelfish.

Unless otherwise noted on a spell in its description, spell penetration checks are only required for spells that do not deal damage, such as Sleep, Charm Person, or Command. There are a small handful of spells that deal damage and use spell resistance, like Sound Burst, but the vast majority of spells that deal straight damage do not.

The general rule is that if a spell deals damage or heals, it ignores spell resistance. If a spell deals both damage and causes an effect or debuff, it 'might' use spell resistance. If a spell does not deal damage, it almost always uses spell resistance.

If you're unsure, just look in the spell's description, if it says YES next to spell resistance, then it does.

and even that isn't a sure thing. for example, pale master auras have to get through spell resistance, and they are heal/damage spells.

That's why it's a general rule and not a rule. Generalization.
