    Default Connection to server lost?

Hi there, and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I love this game and have spent what I consider to be a significant amount of money on it, and would like to be able to play it. Unfortunately, every time I log in, regardless of what character or server, I get the red latency disconnect symbol as soon as I can see a character avatar, and very soon thereafter I get dropped from the game with the message "Connection to server lost". I am unable to move or interact with the environment at all before this happens, but any time prior to actually logging into a specific character, I have no issues. I use AVG free edition, which I have turned off to play, hoping that was the issue, no change. I have disabled windows firewall, no change. I have gone through my device manager and clicked "Update Drivers" on every single device, and they all say they are already up-to-date. I am not aware of any hardware firewalls (I am using a CenturyLink DSL device PK5001Z, and am connected via ethernet). I know that my computer is not very good, but it has run DDO fine in the past (once I found out I had to use the smaller log-in screen). I ran a dxdiag and got this result:

So, can anyone help me? I am able to do normal tasks, such as surf the web, send email, stream video, torrent, direct download, just not play DDO. Also, I have run a scan and found "no threats detected".

    Default Update

While waiting for a reply, I logged into the router and changed some settings and upgraded the firmware, will let you know if this did the trick. Apparently there WAS a firewall with it.

    Default sad panda

So something changed, but not for the better.

Instead of giving me the "Connection to server lost" message this time, it simply froze up. I had to reboot the computer. I could not alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete, though it did give me the disconnect error sound. Also, when I got back onto windows, my desktop screen resolution changed?

I have pretty much done everything I can, and still no game

Please keep in mind that I know my computer is old, and I give it plenty of time to work things out before I give up on it.

Interestingly, while on the character (before the freeze), I could manipulate my gui, and when I moused over the latency icon, I could see 0% packet loss, and the sent value was a positive integer, but the received value was 0.0.

maybe I can turn off the router firewall entirely.....

    please help....

Same as last time, loaded in to a red latency icon, could adjust my UI placement, but could not move or interact with anything until I hear the error noise, at which time everything just hangs with an hourglass symbol until I have to reboot.

Super-frustrated, not only with the inability to play, but also with the fact that I have not gotten any sort of reply to this post, official or otherwise.

I am out of ideas, can anyone else think of anything? I used to install cable for Comcast, so I am not completely tech-ignorant, and my girlfriend works in IT, and she has no clue whats up either.

I am now quite certain that it is not my ISP (I am in Seattle, we give good net), and it is not the modem/router, and it is not a firewall or antivirus problem. I even checked the ddo store from my character select screen, and that was working fine as well. Was tempted to get some turbine points and buy one of the new packs, but figured that was stupid if I can't get into the game.

I am starting to think that the problem is not actually mine, but rather Turbine's.

I've been dealing with this for weeks, but not so bad as you you have it - I get failures to join after double-clicking the character I want to play. 2-3 failures, then all of a sudden, it succeeds. Luckily, I'm in WINE, so for me a reboot is a simple close, then reopen.

Wireshark pcaps show Turbine's IP is sending TCP RST (reset) when the failures occur, it does not when it succeeds.

There's no reason it should be resetting me (my client's not flooding or doing anything different between those connections where it succeeds vs. fails), so I suspect funkiness on their edge or their ISP.

I take it you are connecting wirelessly? If that is the case, and especially if this is a new issue, try looking for environmental issues.

If you are using a router that does not automatically look for the least busy channel, try switching the channel you are operating on. If you live in an apt complex, sometimes you need to adjust this to account for new neighbors.

Look for things that can give a poor wireless connection such as poor router position, new electronics nearby putting out interference, ect. My router is positioned between my kitchen and the laptop in the living room, and when my wife runs the microwave, my connection slows to almost nothing. (luckily I play DDO on the hardwired desktop).

Oh, that is another thing to try if you are going wireless. Try a physical connection, and if it improves things then you know it is a signal problem.

(Don't worry about the computer being old, all things considered they will play the game fine - in lower graphics and maybe slower, but good enough. I do it all the time.)

I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, and I haven't looked closely at your DDO diag yet, but I do have to ask, when did you first start having the problem? (You said you'd been playing fine.) What changed?

If the DDO client freezes (more than one freak occurance), it's going to be more than connection issues.

There are many connection issue "user experts" floating around, hope one of 'em sees your message soon.

I am not connecting wirelessly, I am plugged into the back of the modem/router. Please don't assume, just read the posts

I have, for several years, been playing this game on this laptop, but sometimes I need the HD space and delete the game. I have not played for several months, and only recently reinstalled and am having this problem.

I basically leveled 4 toons to 20 on this laptop in the past.

From my experience, it is going to be something small, stupid, and completely beyond my ability to have forseen that fixes this.

TY for the "hope it gets better", but it would be nice to have some sort of knowledgeable feedback....

    Default progress?

So, since I was reminded that I just installed the game, I went back into my downloads folder, and erased anything DDO, then I also deleted any DDO setup files I had from the install, leaving only the launcher.

On a whim, I logged in to a server I never use. I created a fresh toon, and was able to play. I ran Durk's got a secret, just to verify there were no issues, and even created a group.

This has me really confused, so I am going to attempt to log into my main server now. I really hope this is not an issue with me just having too much stuff on my mains or something, that would really frustrate me.

    Default officially upset

    Immediately booted from Ghallanda.

I have 3 level 20+ toons there. Not happy.

Would like a response from someone in tech support as to why this is happening.

What do you get when you ping gls.ddo.com with at least 100 pings? You could also try a tracert gls.ddo.com? I'm wondering how well your connect to DDO from outside the client.

Yeah, I asked before for you to please read before commenting. I am not connected wirelessly, and ping or tracert is irrelevant, as I can play just fine on Thelanis with a fresh toon (been playing all night). I can't access my mains on Ghallanda. It's not my connection.

Upon reading your dxdiag report, I believe your issue is related to your laptop's very low available memory. It appears that even before running the game, the report is showing that your system is using 524mb memory, and you only have 1024mb to begin with.

The ddo client has grown to become quite a bit larger, especially since the introduction of the u14 expansion. To play the game now requires much more resources, certainly more than the original specs when the game was introduced.

From the symptoms that you are describing, and the dxdiag report, I believe what is happening is that your laptop is simply taking much too long to load in your characters, and is timing out. This is because you have little available memory, and so windows is having to swap much memory to your hard disk, as well as load in game data at the same time, and frankly laptops of that era used hard disks which are very slow.

You seem to be able to sign on to a different world and login a fresh character without your time out problem, and this can be explained because the fresh character doesn't have as much gear/inventory to load up, and probably little gear equipped requiring umd and stat calculations, so basically, doesn't have to load as much "stuph."

So I will ask you to try the following to help you with two issues, one being your available system memory, and two, a few tips to help work around your slow hard disk issues.

As far as available memory is concerned:

The first suggestion I would ask you to try is to remove your avg free. I myself have an old laptop which has ddo installed with no avg free, and my dxdiag reports that of my 1024mb ram, I am only using 170mb.

There is a free product called gamebooster that you can try to install. What gamebooster does is pretty much puts your system in a gaming mode, which mainly shuts down some windows services (like print spooler for example) which are not necessary to run games. In my experience, it frees up around 40 to 50mb ram, which doesn't read like much, but on our memory starved systems, actually can help.

With regards to slow hard disk:

We can't make the hard disk any faster. But we can help prevent how much the hard disk is used. I recommend checking and adjusting your swap/page file size, and to make it permanent. In my experience, a good setting for 1024mb systems is to use a paging file of 2048mb. And by making the minimum and maximum size the same, windows doesn't have to use disk resources during the game to grow or shrink this file.

The ddo client has a few very large files which contain the game data. These files have the extention .dat. These .dat files actually have their own internal file system which contain several (and I mean thousands) of files. While loading the game, and during game play, these small files within the big files need to be accessed quite often, and your (slow) hard disk has to seek through the large files to get at the smaller ones.

So the best work around you can do to increase your gaming performance, and reduce the use of your hard disk, is to actually run ddo from a flash drive. Your laptop is equipped with usb 2.0 ports, so you should have no problem running from a usb flash drive.

Not that I am trying to plug a specific brand, but I run ddo from an 8gig kingston flash drive. The read/access time I find to be quite fast. So by running the game from flash (will be the best 10-15 bucks you'll ever spend on the game) means that your hard disk access will be greatly reduced, and will be limited to just memory swapping during the game, and not "thrashing around" swapping memory and loading game data at the same time.

Please try these ideas to see if they help you. If it works well, you can try to re-introduce your antivirus again afterward to see what impact that may have. You can always remove it again if you have to.

    Regards,

    ...J

    J:

    You Rock.

This is exactly the type of advice I was after.

I will try all of your advice as soon as possible.

Just need to figure out a few things like how to change my pagefile, how to run DDO off a flash drive, and whether or not to swap to a win7 OS.

No sarcasm here, seriously, thank you.

Apparently I can't run DDO off the flash drive. I can get to character select, but once I try to pick a toon, the client crashes.

Uninstalling AVG seriously sped up my decrepit Dell, though, so thanks for that.

That is unfortunate, running from a flash drive should work. Did you copy the entire turbine folder over to the flash drive? I did that, made a copy of the DDO shortcut on my desktop, and then modified the properties of the shortcut to point to the drive letter and path to the flash drive. There are two places which need to be modified.

Are your characters parked in the harbor by chance? Or another heavy populated place?

From the character selection screen, try going into options and change to a much lower screen resolution (for now.) Also put a checkmark in the option to detect optimal settings. The goal here being to use fewer system resources for when you load up the character. If you happen to get in, move your character(s) to a low population area like the armor shop in house deneith, or any shop where you can buy spell materials. This way you won't have the server sending your client as much data (information on where everyone around you is) when you load in. The harbor is a particularly bad place to load in right now because of the winter festival going on and snow.

If you were able to make the paging file change, that's great. I forgot to mention this before, but it's best to have a paging file that is contiguous, and not spread about the hard disk if you have file fragmentation. You may want to try the following:

    1) Set your paging file minimum size and maximum size the same at a small value, like 128mb.
    2) Reboot.
    3) Use the windows defragmenter utility to defragment and consolidate the files on your hard disk.
    4) Go back and set your paging file minimum size and maximum size to 2048mb. This should create the paging file contiguously.
    5) Reboot.

You don't want win7 on that laptop. It's a pig. And I don't think it will even install on a 1024mb system.

Let us know how you make out

Yeah, Win7 wouldn't load onto my laptop. My GF is getting a new laptop with win8, I am hoping I can just use that, but have read that ddo is having some issues with win8.
