Buyers beware: Buying and Selling Stones of Experience

Yes, yes. OMG XP STONES ZOMG! Putting the debate aside for a moment, I want to clear up confusion about how Stones of Experience work. I have seen many frustrated players discover that these stones are not as clean a commodity as we expected. The purpose of this thread is to consolidate information about Holiday Box Stones of Experience and to prevent fraudulent trading. I have personally witnessed these things get thrown around like hot potatoes when people discover that you cannot use one if you did not open the holiday box. Buyers, and sometimes sellers, do not realize that the Stones need to be used by the person who opened the holiday box.

New Stones (Holiday Box)

• You can trade for a Stone of Experience, but you cannot use the stone if you are not the character who opened the Holiday Box (confirmed)
  
  
• Want to trade for an experience stone? Either trade for the entire Holiday Box, or have the person apply the stone directly to the level 8-15 character
  
  
• You can use more than one Holiday Box Stone of Experience on the same account/character. (confirmed)
  
  
• There is no expiration date for these Stones of Experience. (confirmed)
  
  
• Buff yourself with experience boosts before using the Stone, and you will get a little bonus XP tacked on top
  
  
• Applying the Stone will grant you enough experience to hit level 16. Extra banked experience at level 8 will not help you, so it is advantageous to use the Stone of Experience as soon as possible. (re: this thread)
  
  
• For xp optimization, you can level up to 15 and keep the remaining experience banked, if you want to get bravery bonus on Gianthold and Orchard of the Macabre quests.
  

The stone of experience from the Holiday Box can indeed be used by characters who have previously true reincarnated or used a stone of experience before.

Old Stones (Pre-Menace)

• You CAN use the Holiday Stone if you previously used a pre-Menace of the Underdark Stone of Experience
  
  
• Pre-MOTU Stones of Experience now work again, but include the same restrictions as before (no druid levels, one per account ever). Here's a page with information about the old Stones of Experience. If you missed Stoning before, and happen to have one in your bank, you're in luck: you can potentially use both your old Stone as well as a Holiday Stone.
  
  
• You can use a Pre-Menace Stone on another player who meets the restrictions. You must be in party with them.

I have an old one.


Tried it on myself. Didn't work. My guy was lvl 8 and had used the old ones before. So, I got an error saying I already used one on my account.

Set up a deal to stone a 8th level person. Put it on hotbar. It WOULD NOT ACTIVATE from hotbar.

I thought maybe it's cause the toon I was trying from was only lvl 8. So, I put it in shared bank, went on my main (lvl 25) and tried again on someone else. IT WOULD NOT ACTIVATE FROM HOTBAR.


Dunno what else to say. I couldn't even activate it for myself from the hotbar. It just did nothing. I tried targeting the other person and clicking in inventory. It tries to do it on myself then. (Get error etc.)

Tried in AND out of party with person.


Bottom line: Old Stones Don't Work from Hotbar currently in my experience.



UPDATE: Cleansing Ritual doesn't help either lol. (Was worth a try)

i thought that the stones of experience (from the preorder time) disappeared from inventory after the promotion ended. how do people still have them leftover?

is it because if you left them in the bank, they were preserved?

I was under this impression as well. I had 4 stones left over and they have since disappeared. If I have missed out on potentially getting 4 more of my TRs from 8-16 for free I am going to be rather miffed.

They are different items. The first were "stones of shared experience". These are somewhat different. The first were 1/account, etc. - these are as many as your credit card can support.

If I was unclear, I meant that I tried it on an 8th level party member ALSO multiple times from different toons. It will not activate from the hotbar for anyone for any reason.

Some folks had their stones in the bank or in a Reincarnation Cache, which prevented them from disappearing. Thus, there are a few precious pre-MOTU Stones of Experience lying around yet.

Yes, but the only situation you can use em (as far as I can figure) would be if you had left over, never used one yourself on your account, and then activated it on yourself from your inventory.

In other words, like no one.

My understanding is that it also works when cast on a party member who qualifies for the experience stone.

And I'm saying it doesn't work. I tested it myself numerous ways. It will not activate from the hotbar. So, you can't target a party member to do it. It literally does nothing when you click it in the hotbar. At least when you activate from inventory it goes through prompts/error messages.

I guess you're doing something wrong. I wish I could tell you what. According to Teth and Celestialbeast, the old Stones worked for them without a hitch.

Have you tried using the "old" stones from the toon that originally claimed them?
