Default Should I try Asheron's Call?

Until about an hour ago (when I tried to log in to the DDO forums and got the Turbine splash screen), I had only heard of the name Asheron's Call and couldn't have even told you it was an MMO.

I now find out that it is owned by Turbine.

During the downtime this morning, I was able to (unlike DDO) go to their forums and take a stroll through some thoughts about AC.

For the most part, the AC players seem to be a WHOLE lot more content than the DDO player base.
I seen plenty where the DEVS were getting actively involved in the threads...big plus one.

I know nothing of the game though and I have considered (threatened in the past even) to leave DDO for another MMO.

The rumor mill on AC is that DDO and LotR is doing bad due to it going F2P (AC is not F2P btw).
The Devs go out of their way to comment and squelch rumors on AC and yet this one they make no comment on.

This is only from about an hours worth of observation on a game that has been out since 1999 which means I could be completely off base.

My question is, does anyone know anything about AC (gaming experience...not business model)and if it is any good and would it be worth trying for a month or two to gain some perspective on DDO? Am I missing something...shouldn't it's lifespan by itself speak for itself?

Give me some unbiased feedback (personal experiences are preferred).
Pros and Cons to AC is kind of what I am looking for.

Please, NO POSTS slamming Turbine or DDO...If an actual fact "seems" to be negative toward either I can deal with that...but no flaming them.

AC was my first MMO and my first love. She took my MMO virginity and so much more. I played for countless hours( I mean really, who needs sleep). The lore behind that game is amazing( to me at least) the world is literally massive. If you max your run skill and get fully buffed, it would still take considerable time to cross from one end to the other. Corner to corner? Hell looking at 45+ minutes easy. Granted there IS teleport magic and waypoints, but its still massive.

There is no set character classes, you pick your stats and then skills and go from there, so you can do anything. Sadly this does not always work of course, there are still optimal builds, but its fun to explore. The vassel and Patron system AC had is still one of the best reasons to guild I have ever seen, when it works properly and not for stupid xp chains( not going to get into that, go ahead and look it up though, was a major blah moment for me in AC)

That all being said, its a much older MMO, there are no set quests so its almost a pure grind( now this is when I quit about 7 years ago, so stuff may have changed). You go to a dungeon and just kill kill kill. It was fun at first for me, but over time I lost my interest in it. Looting is also a pita for me, there is just so much, and the crafting system is awesome, but massive learning curve, and always the chance to lose it all, but I did find that fun at first.

I would say check it out, but be prepared to not like it simply due to the evolution of MMOs. It was a GREAT thing back when and I check on the lore updates every so often, as the story sucked me in so hard, and the unique monsters and story behind them was just so, so awesome for me.

I will always have a place in my heart for AC( and I loved AC2 as well, **** you microsoft for messing it up and forcing it out early , so much rage) but its just not doable for me anymore. But still, its worth a look, never know, you might find love for it for at least a little while

I agree with LordRavnos' comments about AC1. It was y first MMO, and a most enjoyable game for many years. When I left about seven years ago, however, it had become a grind, was no longer fun for me, and was dominated by exploiters.

I don't know what the state of the game is today. Back when I played, mages were supreme and everyone else was second-class. No character type could truly survive at higher levels without self-cast spells. So, if you do play AC1, roll a mage to start with, and enjoy what used to be called Asheron's Call for Mages.

Stunned. Just stunned. Very strange move, I think.

For me Asheron's Call is the game that defines Turbine.

If you play at the moment it's pretty much two games in one.
You get Asheron's Call and you get in the beta for Asheron's Call 2.

    I would try it.
