Unhappy Why am I having problems?

Long story short, after much ado, I broke down and bought a new graphics card for my machine. The worst part about this is it didn't fix any of the problems I was having. I still get rubber-banding, stall outs, video lag spikes and other problems. I have the following in my machine currently:

    1) Radeon 4870 OEM 512MB graphics card
    2) 7 GB L3 ram
    3) Quad 4 processor
    4) about 80%+ of my 640 GB hard drive open
    5) Cable modem with an upload speed of 3.7 Mbps and a download speed of 6.8 Mbps

    Here is my current dxdiag:

I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that most, if not all, games are broken to some extent.
One should not complain about them if one cannot fix them.
I, for one, should take this to heart as I embark upon another journey through this game.

rubberbanding indicates network issues. Could be you, your home network, your path to Turbine, or Turbine itself. Normally I find it is the 2nd or 3rd.

Video freezing could be soooo many things, but all are client side. If you are doing UMD, sorry, but that is the game and you have to wait for Turbine to fix that video freezing like the rest of us. Any time your cha/umd score changes you get stuck doing a recalculation of everything.
Now if you aren't having that happen, it is something else.

As a side note, I have seen USB devices that were on the edge of dying cause issues also when it comes to lag, mostly because the OS sees them as there then not there, but so fast it never reports it, but it really slows over all preformance down.

I shall assume you have made certain all drivers are up to date.

P.S. 7 gig? That is a really odd number. I'd only ever do matching sets any more. (but that is me.)

    Firstly...
    Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002)
I hope is not the 32-bit version, if it is your 7 GB of ram is worthless as 32-bit has a physical memory handling cap of 3.5GB.
The 32 bit also has much more difficulty letting the video card handle the video procesing cleanly.
*Upgrade to Windows 7-64Bit, it handles the processing much cleaner and significantly faster vs Vista.

    Secondly...
Clean up the hard drive and make sure your pc is up to date with required and optional updates.
Ensure you are using the current video card driver
    Defrag at least 2 times.
I use a freebie tool CCLEANER from Pirform that does a great job getting rid of residual useless files.

    Thirdly
    http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
Check how your machine stands up to the system inspection vs the system requirements (Dungeons and Dragons Online is on the dropdown list)
This will test how your machine's components hold up for specific game requirements (cpu, video, etc...)

    Fourthly...
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/
to see what your real upload/download speed is.

DDO is relatively not that intensive for system resources, video is typically the biggest driver for this game.

    Other things to look at.
DDO video options - turn off all shadows and anything shadow related. Shadows are resourse hogs and add nothing to the game playablilty.

Adjust resolution up/down to test for game lagginess.

Listen to your hard drive when playing .. is it chattering a lot with activity. could be a sign you need defragging or your Vitual memory settings need some tweaking
..(could also mean your drive is in rough shape, SSD is a great upgrade, but when you get this deep.. new machine considerations come into play)

Relogging client - if you switch toons regularly, exit ddo and reload. DDO is terrible for memory bleed or some other issues.. whatever it is ultimately DDO hogs memory resources and does not cleanly release them when switching toons.

Periodic reset of Router - even the routers need to be reset now and again.

Good Ethernet cable going from Router to your PC (Cat5e) no kinks/pinches/knots in cable due to years of relocating.

DDO does have its lag moments. look at your options settings there is an option to turn on your network connectivity display. Gives a icon on your desktop that you can drag around. When you hilight it it shows latency and has red/yellow/green icon which may idicate communication issues.

and like Missing Minds said above they have not addressed the UMD lag that is cripping in high activity situations so if you UMD you are in the same boat as the rest of us.

My money is on this. I've found that this appears to be the primary reason for other issues in this game (like crashing on zone-in for large zones.)

Though, if it were me, I'd upgrade to Win8-64. Going from a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit will require a full reinstall, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Good point ..the 32bit to 64bit upgrade does wipe the current system to install the new one, more of a clean install than upgrade.
Not necesarially a bad thing though as it will wipe any old accumulated stuff off the system.

I haven't had a chance to play with Windows 8 much on the face of it it looks great, but I dont have enough playtime to recommend Win8.
Win8 is curretly selling pretty cheap so would be worth looking at.

For what its worth... most major corporations are still using Win7 exclusively, even on brand new machines. Windoz 8 still has some issues, in addition to the interface many hate.

One nice thing is if you get a win8 license, and you can get your hands on a genuine copy of the Win7-64 DVD, the win 8 license generally includes free downgrade rights so you can run 7 now and 8 later if you want.

Microsoft is currently selling the Win8 upgrade for $40, hard to beat that currently.

Got any links to prove this? AFAIK there is a hardly difference running a 32bit game on a 64bit OS vs 32bit OS. The key factor for gaming on a 64bit OS is more memory.

There are lots of posts throwing their opinions one way or the other... go a head and Google them.... but basically they are all maningless.

I offered advise based on my personal experiences with my machines and DDO specifically.

I had 2 Dell XPS 720's one with Vista 32bit and one with Vista 64Bit, they played fine after the Vista updates(intiial release Vista was terrible).
I was not overly impressed vs my older XP machines so I upgraded the 64bit one to Win7 and was impressed by the improvement so I upgraded my 32bit one too.
It worked better, but not quite as good as the 64bit one. Once I added more RAM to the 64bit one there was no longer any comparison.

The key factor for 64 bit is definitely more memory, I would put 6GB as the bare minimum.

AS my previous post shows ..I listed some things to check besides just upgrading, all of which should provide improvements to any system that is showing lagginess from the client side. Cant do much with the server side.. we will have to wait for Turbine to address those issues.

win8 is not faster then win7. even the loadup times are a farce since win8 doesnt shutdown, but goes into a standby mode now. you will not notice 1 bit of fps gain between 7 and 8 with gaming.
I think it will depend upon your finances (win8 is dirt cheap), if you like your phones interface and if you believe(like the majority of the planet) ever other windows release is junk.

One think on my laptop I did that dramatically improved performance was to start launching ddo from a flash drive. There is a ton of HD i/o going on. If your getting the step step pause type of lag, not pure graphics lag, a solid state drive might be something to consider if your budged allows.

    Default windows 8

    just so everyone knows

"Windows 8 Release Preview it should be stressed is not supported, this thread is simply a reference for anyone playing the game on it that is encountering an issue where the launcher is getting stopped on the "Examine" stage."..."NOTE: Windows 8 is not currently supported."
