Default My grievance on playing DDO

I am a newbie to this game, even playing a month full still don't change the fact that I feel newb.
I don't care that the fact this game use dice on all aspects, I am new to D&D and it's too complicated for me to memorize.
On all time, I don't even see any fun in playing DDO, I tried many ways to develop my fun on this game, I even bought many premium contents. I don't see any specialties in any class, not one.

you see, I tried sorcerer at first. People talking about it about their easiness to leveling.
I was OK at first, it did fun after all, 1 hit kill on almost any mob except the slimes. After Korthos, everything turn ****, most my spells give "save" TOO MUCH, WAY TOO MUCH. even spell like "Maximize power" will shorten your life for 2 secs. Then I look to my spells and think...is there any good spell at this level? (I was like level 2 or 3)

I tried barbarian, combo with half-orc. They're indeed OVERPOWERED no matter what people say about their scientific calculation on damage like "Falcion type weapon does more damage cause get crit more", but I say no matter what greataxe or greatsword or what ever that has 2-12 dmg with 5% worth more than anything. But, these guy are very VERY easy to touch by enemies, so....getting a barbarian hireling will give you FLAWLESS VICTORY or DEATH.

I don't want to speak about rogue, they're like 7th level below WOW's rogue or Guild Wars' rogue, or EVEN SKYRIM.

Hunter? hmm...sooooooo........weak that sometimes I can only deal 1 damage from range, and afterall I should consider it to melee weapons. the close range shoot skill is also like....doing nothing.

I haven't purchased any artificier or druid. I heard that they're like cheating.

I purchased monk.....they're indeed...I can say "good". I also have a monk that has 1 pirate set from the cove. it makes me to be like superman (not physically, but in action). the frozen tunic also very good, although I need some days to achieve it. But I picked the wrong path, Darkness is a pure ****, no kidding.

overally the melee is okay...but the range is sophisticated dice miscalculated damage dealt.
some people use two swords, I still can't see what's good from that.

Every "class" has the same skill like jump, UMD ****, and many ***** that I never use in game. Jump, swim is okay, it makes me easier to run like crazy in dungeons.

farming favor is not my type, I don't like it, don't suggest me that, ever! I am not "Chinese gold farmer" type.

Please, suggest me some fun to this game..... I like this game because it has many different things from overall RPG.

one more thing, don't show me a build like a math table, I don't read that. But, show me a link which show some level 20 character (any class) did best on their best ability. Like you like a Rogue level 80 PvP master in WoW, or something like that.

    Thanks for reading

Many aspects of the game change from low level to high level.

Meleeing with a greatsword/greataxe is so effective at low levels that many people will recommend it for even wizards and sorcs. By level 9 or so your barb will not feel that over powered because the enemies will not usually die on the first hit and that means they get to hit back. The higher up you go the more obvious your lack of defense will become and you dependance on a healer type to keep you alive will go up to the point that you will need a heal after every mob or 2.

Fighting with 2 weapons does more damage to a single target than using a 2 handed weapon, but only after you have greater 2 weapon fighting, and thats around level 11, higher for some classes.

Range combat is indeed weaker than melee but has the advantage of keeping you far enough from the enemy that they cant hit you most of the time. There is no hunter class in ddo, the ranger is built to do BOTH melee fighting and range combat.

When people are talking about the ease of leveling a sorc, they are not talking about the first few levels, where you have single target spells to pick from, but area effect spells like fireball, and also persistant aoe spells like wall of fire, that do large amounts of damage to every mob around you, making for some very short fights. Things die before they even get to you, and die so quickly that you dont take much damage.

Welcome to the DDO community. After reading your post I think this is the source of your frustration, and you are not even realizing it. D&D is all about dice and math, to get success above normal difficulties you need to build your toons perfectly and must know what you are doing. Unlike DDO, WOW is made for 5-13 years old, and you really don't require any strategy to get success there. Also WOW is a bit solo friendly, on the other hand DDO focus more on social aspects. However making a complete solo build in DDO is also viable but if you want to solo above normal difficulty settings, you better make your characters properly.

For new players, rather than trying out different classes/races, I suggest to stick to one class/race and try to understand it first. It takes time to understand a particular class/race in DDO. Again, you have to set up your mind to optimize your characters by searching different types of build/item advice in the forums, and adopt the one which meets your needs.

Since, you have asked for the links of successful characters, check out my signature, there are 4 characters listed (i.e. Aakash, Ashkaa, Sardaar, and Tanveer) and all of them are successful. Personally I myself is not fully satisfied about my rouge, though it tops the kill count most of the time. IMHO it's nothing compared to my rouge-archer in Skyrim. So, a personal advise, never make a rouge at first life.

One more thing, saying stuffs like "Chinese gold farmer" is indeed very racist attitude, so I hope in future you will be a bit more careful about choosing the words. Have a nice day.

For #1 - ALL classes have pros and cons that the player has to deal with. Although some will argue with me, no class unto itself is automatic win just by using it. All depend upon player playstyle.

For #2 - I prefer light monk, but one thing to remember about D&D is often times it is a good idea to switch from one thing to another. Take picking feats and enhancements for some classes - often a player will start with survivability skills for the first half or 3/4 of a character's progression to 20, then switch around level 15-16 to another set of enhancements (respec) OR feats (lesser reincarnate). In your example - I prefer light monks, personally, but there are builds where folks switch from light to dark later in the character's life.

For #3 - You must use certain skills in order to get certain classes up to snuff. UMD stood out in your post - I struggle on one of my characters because her UMD absolutely sucks (she was skill-starved). But you should also know building a character doesn't equal "put three points in [whatever skill] and immediately notice a difference" - in fact, that's almost NEVER the case. It's a progressive improvement over time. Couple points here and there in UMD and eventually, your neutral-aligned character can use Pure Good weapons, for example - but not immediately.

Your experience is not uncommon - it takes time to understand the intricacies of building a character. It also requires GEAR - not necessarily uber gear, but you're starting essentially naked and a good portion of your success is decent gear.

Try this before you bail on the game - take a level 5 or 6 character into any Chronoscope loot runs you see on LFM (or create your own). After I had a set of Chrono gear, my characters' survivability significantly increased. After that, you will see the difference decent gear can make. Not only that, that level 6 raid is one of the reasons I stuck around to play more - it is a night and day different feel than the early quest grind.

While most old timers came here to play D&D, Turbine has be working hard to eliminate those dice rolls, make them based on anything but D&D (the new tohit system) and carefully listing dice ranges in help. You're welcome.
On all time, I don't even see any fun in playing DDO, I tried many ways to develop my fun on this game, I even bought many premium contents. I don't see any specialties in any class, not one.
Sorry to hear that. Much of the fun is the real time combat (somewhat available elsewhere) and the wide open character design. Note that "wide open character design" means "vast ways to gimp yourself" and you should tread carefully and copy designs found in the forum.

you see, I tried sorcerer at first. People talking about it about their easiness to leveling.
I was OK at first, it did fun after all, 1 hit kill on almost any mob except the slimes. Then I look to my spells and think...is there any good spell at this level? (I was like level 2 or 3)
level 2 you should still be using niac's ray. You should also have master's voice available so you (and anyone else without such skills) can use a great axe (Molin's greataxe rules Korthos). Niacs presumably that was the "one hit kill". If you were using magic missile you need niac's. Level 3 gives you web. Great spell web, and if you don't have a handy barbarian to shred those silly kobolds caught in it, I think they tend not to resist (save) your niacs spell.

As mentioned above, two handed weapons are the path to melee victory. You should be using them at that level and handing out master's touch to clerics and rogues so they can use a great axe.

As barbarians (and half-orcs) in particular are "overpowered" you should consider playing one directly and hiring a cleric to keep you up (barbarians tend to be only functional with a full time healer stuck to their back: this is considered a weakness in endgame play). If you cannot make a half-orc, a human can even be better as they end up with 50 more hit points and tend to always have stunning blow available.

I don't want to speak about rogue, they're like 7th level below WOW's rogue or Guild Wars' rogue, or EVEN SKYRIM.
Rogues really aren't for beginners, but you can start a flamewar elsewhere if you wish. They do give seasoned veterans a completely new look at the game.

Hunter? hmm...sooooooo........weak that sometimes I can only deal 1 damage from range, and afterall I should consider it to melee weapons. the close range shoot skill is also like....doing nothing.
No hunters here, maybe you meant ranger. Rangers should certainly be doing serious damage with the bow (starting from second level, but I would think things die fast enough in Korthos to not notice). Hopefully you aren't on the deepwood sniper path (or indeed any path, they range between somewhat and seriously gimped, but deepwood sniper has been known buggy for years).Bow-based ranger, melee ranger

I haven't purchased any artificier or druid. I heard that they're like cheating.
Artificer can rocket you to 10th level or so, then you are on your own until you pick up blade barrier. After that it is said to be comparable to other casters. I am not at all impressed with druids, you must be hearing that from pen & paper D&D players.
Monks require a lot of clicking, and maybe a good way to transition from wow, but not my favorite way to play (I like rangers and sorcerers. Rangers are heavily nerfed so the sorc gets most of the action lately). Dark monks are more a one trick pony which use "touch of death". It was nerfed sometime back. Light monks can self heal, and that usually is so important to overshadow everything.

overally the melee is okay...but the range is sophisticated dice miscalculated damage dealt.
some people use two swords, I still can't see what's good from that.
Some people might be using old characters (say hi to my ranger) that they enjoy playing. If you mean monks, the version of D&D is said to include such traps in its design. Stupid decision if you ask me.

Every "class" has the same skill like jump, UMD ****, and many ***** that I never use in game. Jump, swim is okay, it makes me easier to run like crazy in dungeons.
Almost. Rogues & artificers have remove traps that make a huge difference. Taking a level or two of rogue is an important idea for some ways to play ranger and wizard (less popular now with artificers so popular). UMD is somewhat useful at low levels (casting the odd wand, using the old race-restricted item) and absolutely huge once you get it near 23 and have some rare gear to push it higher. You can use scrolls to heal ~250hp, bring characters from the dead, and some nifty buffing wands.

farming favor is not my type, I don't like it, don't suggest me that, ever! I am not "Chinese gold farmer" type.
then don't. Even the "tour of the servers" 100 point favor run gets little more than a quarter an hour. Play the way you want. PS. Almost all Chinese players in this game aren't farmers, but are playing the game for fun.

Hate to say it, but this game is still largely based on dice and probability. Lucky for you, most of it gets worked out right after a new update drops, so you don't have to do it yourself. You want high level play? Try Mr. Cow's videos:
How a sorcerer should be played (note, I am not claiming that I can play like this, nor the others.)
How an artificer should be played
How a melee (monk) should be played
How a divine (healer, in this case favored soul) should be played

Note that these include the entire life (while questing, anyway) of a character while leveling. If you want to see what a level 19 character will do, scroll down to the last of the videos (presumably he was done when he hit 20).

    Hi,

DDO isn't a simple game, and you can't expect to perform really well at it from the very first. Especially if you aren't familiar with the D&D 3.5 ruleset.

The best advice I can give you is that you take the helpful advice people are offering here, that you read up on the wiki, and group with more experienced players when you can. People will help you if you ask them rather than complaining about how the game is lacking.

There is a lot of the depth to the game, and when you become more familiar with it you will realise it has a lot to offer. If you make the decision to practise, you will get better, and the game may become more satisfying to you. If not, there are other games which might be more to your taste.

    Good luck with it.

    Thumbs up My two cents

The biggest thing that will make ddo fun is who you play with. There is a huge difference in how the night goes if you can play with people that makes this game fun. I would suggest look around and find a guild to join and if that guild doesn't work find another that will. The people will tell you what to try and what to leave alone.

As somebody has already said this game is 1/3 build and 2/3 gear. I understand that as somebody who has just started that it is hard to know what gear to try to get but that's where people can help you.

Yes there are a lot of people who are all about if you don't have x in con/str/dex you build will not work, or play class y is gimped. I say this because I love my arcane archer and I use him as an archer(but yes it took awhile to get the gear that makes him a viable character in respect to dps). I can not tell you the number of times I have heard but down that bow and use melee or you ****. This is a way that I relax and get away from the stress of life, I have enough people on my case in life about everything else so I don't listen to what people say in the game. Just make a character that works for you and have fun.

That is what ddo means to me anyway. So don't give it up and just try and have fun.
You say I'm crazy, like that's a bad thing?

Talking Thank you for reading my post!

I read all of your comments, thank you very much for a such comments.

First of all, I don't really meant to say that this game is lacking of something. It's just me or somebody else who might get frustrated with this dice based game. I know that this game isn't like WOW, because it's just very different or I would say this is a very new type of MMORPG. Based on my complaints, most of the time are caused by my mind-set on Top ten MMORPG, I tried to make DDO into this list. But as the result, I can't.

I will say now about why I love to play this game once in awhile. I love the DM system....they make the game more lively! The classes, there are many classes in this game...In fact, they say that you can't even call it "class" because they simply are not. I like strolling in the game, or going to dungeons. I like the hireling system, I can't imagine if there is no hireling.

Thanks for such warm welcome, I will discover this game more deeply. I will try to make my own class too, even if it will takes me a many many times for re-roll. I like DDO, I just can't talk about it in front of people who play MMORPG but don't know about DDO because it's different. I don't know what genre of this game should be called.

ps: btw, I am struggle with leveling faster after level 3. I dunno where I supposed to go if I don't want to access VIP content.

    Hi and welcome.

This game has a steep learning curve. Took me about 6 months to level up my first char so don't get discouraged.

By the way my first char was, and still is my main toon, a Rogue hehe. And a fully geared, capped level Rogue is one of the most powerful and versatile characters in the game - just takes time to get there. In my case, about a year and a half, and I loved (almost) every minute of it

You will keep on discovering new and cool things. There will be times when you will say "WOW this game has THAT?! COOL.

As for leveling over level 3. First open up your Social panel and go into groups and join one. Say you are new to game - no one minds, but people do like to know and players will explain stuff to you.
Second, open up your adventure list. It will show what you have done and what is waiting for you up to a couple levels above yours.

Stick with it, it's worth it.
~~ Adrunil - Rogue. Halfling, big guy you can't miss him. ~~
    ~~ Adrunel - Monkcher. (Moncher?) ~~
Robodoc - FvS Evoker-Healer. Post 19: Ended up LRing into 13/7 forc

Not to say that it is 'right' or 'fair' or anything but you can blame the media in this case. About once a year, some Western media organization 'discovers' the fact that folks in Chinese labor camps are used to farm game gold for unscrupulous online merchants. This is in turn written about in various gaming mags and sites. Most folks do not seem to see it as racist because they read about it in 'reputable' mags and sites. I have always found it interesting that none of this gold is ever farmed anywhere else (at least as far as the media is concerned).
