    Default Can't equip collar

    It says pet race wolf

when i try to equip it says wrong race

it shows red x but i bought it from ah anyway to give it a try, first time; no joy

the technical details show no indication of why it is red x, but the only red line is pet race: iron defender, wolf

the red X means that you as a human druid cant equip it, no matter shape. You have opened the pets sheet and equipped it there i assume?

Your pet has its own character page as well. On the front page of it's character sheet, you will find the slot where you put the collar.

Double clicking the collar won't equip it on your dog. You have to click and drag to the pet sheet.

actually I tried that, it just bounced off; i will try again; noticed the slot has a green hightlight so it must work; i probably missed the slot, lol

i will try again and report!

Make certain your dog is the proper level. If you tried it right after you leveled, the dog is still the old level until you resummon it.

last random thought i can think of.

I managed to find a different one on the AH. It seems the only thing that is hanging me up is the umd: 20 requirement, which is weird, but ok

now, the new collar is just a +2, whatever that means, +2 to ac? +2 to to hit/damage?

it equips, but it has an exclamation point; what does that mean?

    thanks

True law collar. your dog isn't Lawful. I'd think the dog is neutral neutral.

    Exactly.

Pets are neutral until you train certain of their enhancements. Depending on the choices that can make them lawful or chaotic.

Not sure what the choices are for druid pets. But, I know that they are there for artificer pets.

    Default aha

that is certainly it; pet alignment; shouldn't pet be same align as druid? pets take after their masters
it doesn't say what the pet align is

does the 'umd: 20' matter? it seems strange to have that as an additional requirement

oh, and what is up with the exclamation point ~! in the item on the pet character page, after equipping? (not the strange lawful item, but the ordinary +2 item)
    and what does it +2?

    thanks

    No.

Pets always start as male or female depending on their master's gender. But they also always start as neutral. So, they do NOT take after their master's alignment. (If the master is neutral then it is just coincidence and not the pet being neutral because of the master.)

They have to learn to be lawful or chaotic. I think they can also learn to be good (although I'm not nearly as sure about this one).

Since everyone answered all but this one: the exclamation point is a leftover unfixed display bug, if in fact you can equip it.

    Kinky!

Your pet can wear it, you can't.

It's not THAT type of mmo.

LOL, I meant "if you can equip it onto the pet". I've seen it on my druid pet - it keeps the red X even when successfully equipped onto the pet - that's silly. In your inventory, yah, that'd sorta make sense, but once on the pet, the "cannot use" x should go away.

It's actually not silly. The program is looking at the requirements of the collar and then comparing it to you. Since you do not meet the requirements to use the collar, then it keeps the red x and informs you that you cannot use it.

This is not to say that they shouldn't change it to compare the item's requirements against your pet for purposes of determining whether it can be used. I think that would be helpful. However, this would probably be a pretty big change. Up to this point, they never needed to code the game to do the following:

    1. Check what type of item it is. Is the item a collar? If yes, go to 2. If no, go to 7.

    2. Check what class the character is. If "druid" or "artificer", go to 3. If not "druid" and not "artificer", go to 7.

    3. Create tool tip (or other information dialog) informing player this item must be equipped on their pet. (Remember, you can't just assume players will know this piece of gear goes on the pet!)

    4. Retrieve stats for character's pet.

    5. Compare character's pet's stats against item's use requirements.

    6. Report whether the item can be used by character's pet.

    7. Done.

And that's just a short version of the different sub-problems that would have to be solved in order to solve the much larger, over-arching problem of "Pet collars compare use requirements against player stats and report the item cannot be used".
