Default Help me fix my pc lag please

My pc lag seems to have got worse lately, thought it was turbine lag (some of it is) but it gets worse round lots of mobs/action. Its starting to become unplayable.
Any advice on this i can do/check without buying better hardware is appreciated thanks.
Currenytl on windows xp, upgraded to windows 7 and had some extremely weird graphics issues i couldnt fix to went back.

Try lowering your graphics, disable all shadow options and post processing effects, increase the texture cache size but lower the texture details, lower the resolution, minimize the rendering distance, and last but not the least if the lag is so annoying that you feel like throwing your PC out of the windows, please stay away from House Jorasco. That will indeed save you few bucks.

Thanks for reply. I had already turnined down nearly everything, doesnt really help. Increase cache size to how much? it was on 0.10.

Im thinking maybe it has something to do with my drivers, or maybe avast antivirus interferes or something?

anything that bumps up your UMD (many ship buffs do this) will cause you lag. (known issues, they are working to change that.)

install DDO to a directory that is NOT inside of "program files"

defrag your hard drive. (as you have a fresh install of DDO from moving to Win7, no need to re install to internally defrag files. "defrag" via a program is an external defrag)

change your windows setting for performance and not visual eye candy. I think the only visual enhancement I have run is 'smooth edge of screen fonts"

Tell your antivirus and other scanners to stay the heck out of the DDO directory.

Don't let useless programs run in the background.

If you have a high enough memory say at least 6 GB then set it max 1.00, otherwise set it to 0.50-0.75 at least. Always disable antivirus softwares while playing the game. If you are facing lag because of crowds, then set the crowd quality to 0.00. Try upgrading graphics card driver, and if you are playing on laptop make sure it doesn't have over heating problems. Sometimes uninstalling the game and reinstalling again afterwards solved many lagged issues.

step 1. lower ddo graphics settings.
id recomend turning off post processing effects, and try a lower resolution. if problem persists reinstall DDO, direct X, .net and graphics/sound drivers.

I'll second the recommendation to defrag your drive.
One thing you can watch for is look at your hard drive light when you're seeing
the worst lag - if it's flashing away like mad, then that's likely the source of your
lag. If you're running the high-res client, that makes it worse.

An SSD would basically solve that problem. I can't tell you how much better this
game runs off an SSD. I know you said avoid spending money on hardware, but
    there it is.

Sound advice. Haven't heard this one before:

    What effect does that have?

(also, OMG someone admits that their system lags and doesn't blame turbine? I think that's a first!)

Windows is a lot more finicky about "allowing" things to happen to anything in "program files"

By not putting it into "program files" you will have less permission issues overall. It is advice that turbine techs have started to give more frequently that I saw starting a few months ago.
I've never allowed DDO to ever be put into program files.

Created a new folder called ddo at root of main drive, transfering old copy of standard res files as we speak will run and update later.

i dont always disable antivirus maybe i should.

setting crowd quality lower always sounded like a bad idea. Ive just set to 0.

im playing on pc that was cleaned out a year ago, maybe i should look again.

Reinstalled xp 6 months ago after a failed win 7 experiment, the graphics were horrendous, like the grphics were spilling out eb=verywhere, i couldnt even walk around my own ship...

That might be the problem from my experience Windows 7 requires 2 GB to run properly while XP runs good even in 512 MB, that's why DDO is running slow after you have installed Windows 7. However if you have already went back to Windows XP then make sure to install Direct X properly, .net, graphics driver update is also necessary. I have found with each update DDO becomes slower, I think it's because of improved texture files and including other graphics heavy contents.

    Default 2gigs

Yep if all you have is 2 gig of mem.
You need to shut most background stuff down, and low graphics settings.
I have 4 computers in my home 2 have 2 gigs of memory a dual core and quad core.
Both lag like crazy unless I shut most things down.
My other 2 computers have 4 gig ram and 6 gig ram both quad core.
One is an Acer quadcore laptop 4 gig ram 1.5 ghz per core .
Main system I use is a quad core 2.5 ghz per core with 6 gigs of ram and a 1 gig video card.
Only lags at peak times unless I have it set on the highest settings with directx11.
To run it smoothly I run it on med settings.
Plus on both the Acer and my main system I do not have to shut other stuff down
Plus what anti virus do you use free or paid?
If free Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the better ones with one of the smallest footprints I have found.
    Free or paid.
AVG and some of the others can hog resources same with a lot of the paid programs.
MSE is not available in all countries.
Even though I have had lots of computers in the last 30+ years (27 computers) I am no computer expert.

*** are you poeple talking about?

He said hes running XP with 2 gigs of ram.. and 2 gigs is absolutely fine on 7 (and 8 for that matter)

How are you people giving advice when you know nothing about the actual system?

user110000... Please post your DXDIAG report on your PC and we can figure out what issues you actually have., It very well could be drivers. but NO ONE can tell from the info you provided so far.

Equally important to note, is SOME lag such as spawn lag, UMD lag, etc IS the game itself - I upgraded this year to 32 GB RAM, 8-core processor at 3.6 GHz and a Tesla-based 2 GB video card... there's no way DDO is pushing those to their limits.

While it did reduce a significant portion of the lag, events like Mabar DO hammer the servers - and you can feel that in other locations besides Jorasco or the graveyard itself. Don't get too frustrated with your setup - some of it IS the 2 GB RAM, but not all of it.

Yes, let's get something clear here - WinXP doesn't need more than 2Gb of RAM.
    I have a dual-core AMD 2.4GHz, SATA SSD, GeForce 550ti, WinXP, and 2Gb DDR1
(so, what most serious gamers would consider "middle of the road" kit at best)
and this game runs at 1920x1280 at very nice frame rates on the high-res client
with very little lag, almost instant zone-ins, and only minor occasional stutters while
running through common areas the vast majority of the time. This game doesn't
require top-of-the-line hardware to run really well, but there are a lot of little
pieces that have to be right to get to this state.
