Wink How to greatly annoy all casters

Step 1: Add a % spell failure chance to all player spells (meaning spells cast from sp, and ones cast from scrolls) when under the effects of the "red alert" harried debuff.

Step 2: Add spells like Blindness/Deafness and Sphere of Silence to the game, along with Vocalize and other spells that allow for casting under the effects of silence. Deafness would add a % spell failure chance due to the caster's inability to hear his/herself speak.

Step 3: Profit, if you happen to be a melee. Growl in frustration if you happen to have a significant reliance on your blue bar.

    Default no

This would frustrate more than casters, especially in quests where DA is part of the quest due to poor programming/AI and Yellow-Red DA is common (think Bastion of power, for example).

Additionally, the melees can't get haste because I'm now getting spell fails. I can't self heal due to spell fails so the healer now has to take her focus off the melees and heal us. Melees are taking much more damage because I can't crowd control, spell fails, and the cleric now has much, much more work.

    Bad idea.

Yes, this would greatly annoy casters.
No, I don't think that there is any need or want for this in-game.

Melee players want parity with casters through actual equal capabilities. Whether this means buffing them, or bringing the casting system down into balance isn't generally an issue.

The point is that they want balance. Not to just make casting annoying. That's just spiteful and doesn't actually help resolve the issue.

    Step 1: don't cause DA.
    Step 2: don't get agro.
Step 3: continue to be able to cast spells. (just like I do now).

Step 4. Wonder why no healers/buffers/CCers are joining your parties.

Oh and we already have blindness, maybe you didn't notice it with all the blindness immunity and blindness cure pots and spells. One step forward, one step back.

I would not recommend building anything around dungeon alert, since this game aspect dont work at best.

Deafness/Silence on the other side is quite interesting idea.
I like when i Sand of Mechantarum enemy casters spam feeblemind to annoy my warchenter. Dont see a problem in more annoying stuff like that, in the same way i dont mind curses/blidnes/deases/rot/deatspells/blindness... another thing u need take into account, and be prepared for. If you dont like being prepared... then casual is always the option.

Of course players may use it to. Just in case instakill, nuke, CC to death wasnt in their mood this time.

And i agree that melees just want a fair thretment, if casters can combine great killing power with great utylity, then in name of what denay it melee?

This post is really not getting to the heart of the problem, melee classes just need more options.

Combat feats could use a buff...
stunning blow (increase DC to 10+1/2 level+str)
slicing blow (make it a cleave like attack that harries multiple enemies)
sap (could use a little bit of a buff)
improved trip (the combat expertise feat requirement seems excessive)
whirlwind attack (timer is too long and feat requirements excessive)

    add feats?
grapple (if you are stationary and succeed on grapple check the enemy can not move)
improved grapple (similar but better than grapple)
improved bullrush (knockdown attack similar to what Minotaurs do)

    Annoying caster is too easy.
The best way is to shut down servers. As a side effect you also annoy melee... but at least you give everyone an opportunity to see what happens in RL...

Add silence only if they add most important part of debuff: all communication methods disabled.
Add deafness only if they add most important part of debuff: all communication methods disabled.

    /frown
Is this an anti-DA or anti-caster thread or both? i guess it's just to annoy casters :/
Anyways spell failure has nothing to do with dungeon alert, besides DA alone has nothing to do with anything.
Silence however, i'll sign for, because that's kind of a basic anti-caster spell in d&d and it is not in ddo.

Forget for a moment about area dispel, item dispel, counterspells, deafness, assay resistance, antimagic field, spell turning, spell absorption (spell).
Silence alone is good enough and infinitely more appropiate than just throw up spell failure for no real reason.

However, I do play caster classes so I think that they are indeed potent enough to warrant some some ways to annoy them. Sorcerers and FvSs are at the top. One can win by sheer damage, the other can win by kiting things through blade barriers and self-healing via an extremely large spell point pool. However, nerfing everything is a poor solution when adding new gameplay mechanics and/or anti-caster spells to the game is a much better option.

They could just make all AoE spells damage party members and friendly NPC's.

That would annoy me until I got used to it.
All on Thelanis: Archenpaul Sixblade (Epic Triple Completionist), Archernicus Thornwood, Crestellin Moonwood, Gregorovic Redcloak, Jaklomeo Evermug, Jarladdin Nalfesne, Jonathraxius Kane, and Praetoreus Silvershield (Heroic Triple Completionist, Epic Triple Completionist.)

1: dungeon alert is a pain in the ass for casters too ya know. saves go up significantly with allert. this is already balanced, even if i do hate the current implementation of DA.

2: good idea, silence, vocalise, power word silence and metamagic silent spell - all great tactical options that should be in ddo!

3: if a mele is relaint on a blue bar they are under equipped or poorly played, or at that awkward spot around lvl 12 to 18 where theres no viable self healing other than umd. some casters suffer this issue too ya know.

Im not sure but i hope this isnt yet another post by a mele focused player who fails to see the big picture, fails to remember all those years casters were considered nothing more than buff bots and not allowed into raids.. fails to understand that good players of ALL classes can shine. At least op you present a suggestion that could actualy benefit the depth of tactical options for battling casters, whether that is for players or mobs.

I do agree that point 2 is totaly valid, and would be a welcome addition to the game. couple that with golems behaving porperly regarding magic (essentialy immune excpt vs specific spells), areas of anti magic (which would effect meles gear too btw) and enemies using better magic defences on the fly such as globes, mantles, spell turning, silence effects, feeble mind effects, thought burn poison etc etc.

This is only a problem for divine casters. Arcane spell-abilities and innate abilities can not be silenced or voided.
