    Default Any word on support for Windows 8?? It's out already...

    Hi.

    As Windows 8 recently hit RTM (Release To Manufacturing, the final version) and is already available to some people (mainly developers, college students and others with academic affiliations) it would be nice with some word from Turbine on if/when they are intending to support it. Note, this is not a beta or release candidate, this is the actual release. I, like many others, am upgrading my computer and will of course install the latest release of Windows. Not supporting the latest release of Windows or giving any word of when it will be supported is a pretty big problem to put it mildly.

    I saw that there were some issues with the installer, which may be avoidable, but besides those what other experiences do people have running DDO on Windows 8?

    EDIT: Fixed market->manufacturing.

    I have not heard anything myself, but I have to imagine that Turbine was privy to pre-release versions of Win8 for development purposes. They have been through three Windows versions now (XP, Vista, and 7) and they have always managed to keep the game playable eventually. The main reasons you might want to be concerned about install issues is graphical updates though I would imagine. DDO has an okay record of keeping up with DirectX updates. If there are serious issues with running DDO on Win8, I would expect them to be addressed in a coming Update or Patch.

    This^, in so many words, is how you say time and feedback on Lamannia are wasted.

    Installing .net Framework 1.1 was the bigest hurdle. DDO runs fine on windows 8. You have to manually install the latest directX sdk from Microsoft to enable DX 11.

    Great, thanks. I was mainly concerned due to the stickied post above saying explicitly that Windows 8 is not supported without hinting at when it will.

    I meant Release to Manufacturing. Fixing the typo.

    That's a good question. There are a few reasons.

    - .NET 1.1 is not supported on Windows 8 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh925570.aspx).
    - During install of .NET 1.1, the user will receive a warning that it may not function fully, as it is not supported.
    - When launching DDO for the first time, the launcher will crash with a .NET 1.1 error after accepting terms. Launching it again resolves this issue.

    What this all adds up to is a less-than-stellar user experience, which in turn may turn people away from DDO. We already have folk that are unable to get .NET 1.1 to work on Windows 7 and then give up on DDO. I believe this will get worse with the release of Windows 8.

    Anything that puts that kind of completely avoidable technical barrier between users and the game deserves to be resolved. Moving from .NET 1.1 & .NET 2.0 in the launcher to .NET 2.0 alone is not a big lift, programming-wise. There are only a handful of .NET 1.1 features that need code adjustment when moving to .NET 2.0.

    Me personally will be passing on windows 8. I don't need a tablet OS taped onto a version of windows 7. We'll see how 9 looks when it comes out.
