I have to agree that Otter cases are basically awsome.

I do have to disagree with fragile. I have dropped it down the stairs. Onto concrete. Onto wood flooring. Landed up. Landed down. Drop it at least once a week, and my iphone just keeps serenly going, reassuring itself that I'm just a klutz and not sadistic.

I'm going to go ahead and say ziplock style baggie. Take it out of the bag when you need to use it, I doubt the screen can be used through the bag but who knows.

I also ride, my wallet, phone and map and the such go into a baggie if I think it may rain, have one in my jacket just incase.

I want a phone with long battery life and crystal clear reception.

Show me a smart phone that can do that and I'll switch.

My iPhone lives in my pocket just fine.

I know several people who use otter boxes for their iPhone (including car detailers, etc).
