What, sorcerers can solo? Since when. It even says on the creation screen solo ability: challenging.

Slow down.
The same thing is currently happening with me in my own guild - and they know it - but they take care of me. They are even now holding levels of some of their recently TRed alts because I couldn't play for 3 weeks.
Do they really care for you ? If they would, they would wait for you - or at least help you.
Get yourself a hireling. They're cheap. Use a Cleric, my favourite ones are those who can summon a monster, too.
Best tip : Use a Warforged Hireling, because you as a Wizsrd have Reconstruction. Ue a Warforged Cleric, if possible. Or Favoured Soul. Or Paladin. Those can heal, too. I don't know whether Bard Hirelings can heal as well.
Get up your UMD a bit, at least so much that you'll be able to use the unlimited wand (I always want to write "staff") of cure minor woulds which you can get from the Catacombs quest chain as end reward.
It cures only minor wounds - but it is unlimited. Which is imho a huge plus.
If you manage to get your UMD high enough, then you'll be able to use the limited wands of cure middle wounds (err, what's the right word ?)
which you can get by trading in collectables at Kipling Vranch in the Marketplace (close to the air ships entrance).
You can solo quite a lot - with pacience. And a summoned monster, too. Wizards can, I know it. One of my alts is a wizard, too.
Especially with a wizard : DO NOT ZERG ! You'll get into worst trouble, then.
Instead, learn to rely on the so-called "crowd control" spells. They begin at level 9, I think, and then things become more fun, imho. But I can't judge too much, I must admit, since my wizard is now still at level 9.
Learn to PUG. You'll get bad experiences, good experiences - be prepared that you will not ever know in advance what kind of grop you'll get.
But with a good group, PUGging can be SO much fun ! - And make sure that you put the ones who helped you most get into your friends list. And stick to them (meanwhile trying not to create the image of someone who PUGs only with them because it's a Free Help thing. Try to be helpful yourself !)
In PUGs, casters like wizards are often wwelcomed - depending on the quest. Enemies are vulnerable aganst fire ? Equip a fire spell and you can show that you're valuable in a group ! The so-called "crowd control" spells are a real relief for melees. They'll appreciate your honest help.
Slow down - Playing a Wizard is rather a challenge. Be prepared that you'll need hours for quests for which Zergers need minutes or so. But in the end - the feeling of an accomplishment will be there. Plus the loot and the experience points.
And don't care about the speed of the others. At one point they'll most likely TR and then they'll be at a lower level than you are right now ...
I actually do carry swords with my wizard - "Master'sTouch" is a real nice spell.
Next thing I'll try out is "Tenser's Transformation".
But plate mail and boots ... Uh ...

"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

In my opinion, soloing bites. I can't stand to solo anymore, if I can't find someone to at least duo it with, I don't do it at all. It's a social game, make more friends. You can make friends in PuGs or you might want to join a different guild. Everything is easier with a group, faster too. A lot of PuGs are almost as boring as soloing, but at least there is a chance to meet someone you might become friends with, and more likely than not the extra people will make the quest easier and faster than soloing it.
That being said, if you are dead set on soloing, solo on normal. Bravery bonus is nice, but for a first lifer it's nothing to concern yourself with in the least. A TR can pretty much solo hard on just about anything, and that'll get you the hard streaks. Soloing elite streaks is more trouble than it's worth if you ask me.
Finally, if you are having trouble with your wizard then you are probably playing it wrong. Wizards are best at insta kills, which require high DCs, ESPECIALLY on elite. Get your necro DC up as high as possible with INT, focus feats, and focus items and then crush your foes with your finger.
