Default Got about 100$ for speakers...any suggestions

Hey guys, my b-day is coming up so my friends pooled their money together and have about 100$ (a little more is ok) to buy me a new pair of PC speakers but I have never actually looking to anything more than like 10$ speakers cause I much prefer headphones so you guys have any suggestions or insight

A little bit of a complicated question actually. I know Creative & Logitec does 5.1 PC speaker packages for relatively cheap (<$100), which would leave you enough room to pick up a Sound blaster audigy card (~$30)...but if you are going to go that route, you really need to make sure you have the space/desk to set it up properly.

Alternatively, you can just get a beefier 2.1 set for $100, and skip the card+set up, like this.

My problem with any PC speakers is that no matter what the cost, they always end up sounding a little tinny to me (but I am spoiled). Whereas entry level "entertainment" speaker sets are almost always superior. For example, for around $100 or so, you could pick up Yamaha NS-SP1800BL. The problem there is you need a reciever too, which is going to set you back at least another $100 (refurbished) to $250 (new). If you go this route, it's probably only worthwhile if you are running your TV/BluRay/Etc through it as well.

Careful getting into audio, you can end up addicted and spending quite a bit.

Not really looking to get into the "entertaiment" stuff it's far beyond what I want to spend on this and besides this is purely for music and my 360 those 5.1s look pretty cool...not sure how I would work that...although I DO have alot of shelf space all around me.

Minimum is 2 speakers and a good subwoofer...looking more for quality or quantity (medium volume but very clear is better than massive power and only meh quality)

Again back to surround sound...does that work with most games on the PC/360 or that only work if the game supports it....despite my love for tech I've never bothered with anything more than 10$ speakers...my 300$ headphones handle most of my sound, but honestly my house has kind of become the go to place for a group for hanging or playing DnD so I need to upgrade (I was planning on upgrading anyways this just gave me reason to)...also need a new TV (currently only have 20-22"CRTVs and a 19" 720p LCD Monitor) but thats a bit down the road.

Looking at these right now http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=011908

I have an earlier version of these: Logitech Z506 5.1 Speakers

If you have a 5.1 output card, you should be pretty happy with them.

Do you NEED a 5.1 sound card to use all the speakers (i don't know if I do) seems their fairly cheap though...ranging like 10-30$

It doesn't look like you have to have a 5.1 card to get all of them to go. If you zoom into the subwoofer picture you'll notice it has 2 sets of inputs: Stereo and 6 speaker.

    I agree completely.

The only problem is that they are going to be out of your price range unless you can catch a really good deal on an auction site or, better yet, find a set of refurbished speakers being sold on the Klipsch site itself. A new set runs about $150 or so, but the Klipsch website sells those refurbished sets, brought back to company specs and with a warranty, for like $79. You have to be patient going that route because alot of other folks are looking for the same deal.

7 years ago I bought a pair (new) on amazon for $110. 4 years later sold the same pair back on amazon for $120

Re: 5.1 why would you use 5.1 speakers if you can't output 5.1 sound? That's like buying DVDs but not having a DVD player

I plan to pick up a 5.1 sound card if I decide to go get those speakers (my speakers plug-ins are starting to go anyways)

No, you don't "need" one. A sound card just assists in the conversion from a digital signal (your PC) to an analog output (speakers)...or your mic to your PC (same thing). Most relatively modern PCs will include an onboard chip that often supports surround sound (ie: 5.1).

That said, if you are taking the time to set up a 5.1 system, it's probably worthwhile to grab a card too. You are going to get better audio quality coming out of those speakers. Where you would not need a card would be if you were running your PC out to a receiver. Then the receiver takes care of the conversion.

Yeah that was pretty much my philosophy I LOVE my Tiamat 2.2s but ever since I started running a DnD game my group of friends has swelled and I'm starting to entertain alot more so my 10$ zellers speakers aren't cutting it anymore.
