    Default Profanity Filter

    Mornin' All.

I have a many years old character called Burnemall. Burnemall To Ashes in full.

I came back to the game recently, and apparently my name now falls foul of a profanity filter. In party chat, my name appears to others as a bunch of non-alpha characters and gets pretty annoying.

Neither I, nor anyone else, can figure out what changed, or what string inside my name is the problem.

    Anyone else had this?

I played for ages without the issue before my absence.

    Cheers,

the Profanity filters are programmed with swearing from several languages so your toon name may have a foreign swear word in it that's been picked up after a swear list update.

Yup. Don't know if it still does, but it used to filter "penetration". As in Spell Penetration, you know?

I've never been able to work out why the word 'saint' gets filtered if you put it in your bio.

I believe it works elsewhere though, which makes even less sense.

Some words are obviously not so bad and should be allowed to use (chat, bio, names, pet names, etc):

I once told guild friends about "Turbine Points", I think it was the amount I had. And I don't like using abbreviations much.

Well, gosh, the word "Turbine" got censored !

As did several names of items in DDO in my own language. Yes, and I even once saw a rare encounter's name in WW to be censored, too ...

Bite is also prohibited, as our new guildy yesterday was telling me he needed to go get a bite to eat....I have my filter off so I saw it, but he said it came up filtered for him....after realizing his filter was on, I can't help but wonder what our conversations in guild chat look like to him.....

    Transcript:

    Man, &%*$ and *%&$(($ the $*@&# while she *$&#($ my &%($. Then I *#$)@#*(% her &%(*$.....

Seriously though, I was going to name my wolf CONRÍ, which is gaelic for wolf king....I for the life of me couldn't figure out why I couldn't use that name...guess now I know.

Hahahaha, first time I've heard of a corporation censoring their own name in their own product.

If you can get this song, just listen to it : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Bet_Y...g_on_the_Radio
It demonstrates the work of an profanity filter at full assault.

But based on some HP numbers, CON is a dirty word to 75% of the gaming populace.

    ZING!

I tried typing random special characters in to be funny and say I was censored, and I got to some odd PHP editing page. That's awkward, like when Dr. Evil walked out of his cell and was all like "WHat?" in Goldmember
Ghallanda - LLEWNDYN 27 Necro Wiz (completionist) + other random uncared for players - Blackmoor Defenders
Thelanis - Llewndyn (FVS), Brickadoom Jenkins (barb/ ftr)

Time disparity of the damned? Yeah I know that quest.

People that know it complete in 10-12 minutes.

People that dont know it complete in 1.5 years or so.

All the active mob lag on every server is caused by the noobs that have been in that quest since 2010.

The good news is that after running time sync of the damned, you get to farm LOTD for massive XP.

Sure you can blame Turbine, but I don't. People (some) that play this game will report **** near anything as being offensive. I am emphasizing the word "SOME".

Most people don't care about the stupid ****. But you need to understand that someone, somewhere on some server "reported" something that they decided was offensive to THEM, and therefore it should be offensive to everyone else.

Just like some forumites (SOME) will take a difference of opinion and turn around and neg rep someone because they somehow found a way to find it "offensive".

In a way, it's just another form of griefing.

Not to take away from the OTHER jackwads that purposely set out to be offensive. Those types are a peach as well.

I wouldn't sweat it. And you could always have Turbine change the name for you in the mean time.

    Good luck.

Gratz on reading the OP and posting a valuable response relevant to the discussion (yes, /sarcasm)

With the wonderful option to turn the filter off, I wonder if or why anyone is still using it.
