Default Thank you, Father Mychal Judge: 10 Minutes to Remember 9/11

Here's a compilation I'd like to share, that I created last year, commemorating first responders, and the US military, and all the lives lost, in relation to that fateful date, September 11, 2001. This project also tells the story of a great man, who hopefully you'll remember as well... one of those amazing human stories. There were so many stories of heroes that day, many we'll never hear about. This one, and a few others you'll hear about in a moment, I'm glad to share with you today...

Firemen, police officers, EMTs and workers, lock arms while observing a moment of prayer during a short interfaith memorial service held at the World Trade Center disaster site, October 11, 2001 in New York. One month after two hijacked airliners toppled the World Trade Center, hundreds of dusty cleanup workers stopped for a moment of silence at 8:48am to remember the missing and dead.

Even though we had so many to mourn, so many to remember, we have even more people to thank. Remember your local firemen, policemen, and EMTs today, for their incredible, oft times untold service to neighborhoods all over the world.

I was recruiting for the Navy when that happened. I had to have a retiree come in and show it to me. I went over to the Marines and shown them. THen they sent us home. I got home just in time to see the second building fall. SPent the rest of the day calming down recruits.

I grew up in NYC. Had 1 cousin and 3 friends in the towers at the time. 1 ex high school classmate in the Pentagon.

I was out of state. In a diner, sitting at a table with my mother. I'll never forget the young waitress, just started her first year of college, first job she told us... trembling as she walked her way to our table. She took out her pad to take the order, she told us that someone just attacked the World Trade Center. She had just seen the first tower fall on the TV above the bar. The diner fell silent. There was no sounds. It was as if the world had stopped. I began to immediately think of others, of protecting my family. I was going to my father's grave, a 13 year US Navy/Korean War veteran, as his birthday was September 11. We postponed that, to head home to watch the news.

The stories I could tell, as a kid, growing up in NYC. My father taking me down to 1 Chase Plaza, showing me the first computer I ever laid eyes on (they were massive, from floor to ceiling, taking up an entire floor), showing me the "twin towers." He was so proud of those buildings. Many New Yorkers were. Many Americans were. I could tell of the free concerts I got to see at the base of those towers, including a concert I saw 30 days before they fell. I could tell you of the fireman I met, Fabrizio Bivona, a first responder, who asked me to help him layout his book 24 hours before his deadline set by Bantam Books, for release a few years later (I was up 48 hours straight ensuring he met the deadline). His story was a direct account by and for first responders (the firemen, policemen, emts, military, etc.)

But the best thing I could tell you, is the awesome sense of brotherhood and sisterhood I felt when I arrived in NYC to see friends and family. Everybody was One. Never was the New York spirit and resolve so alive. Never was one diverse melting pot, so tightly bonded.

It was my birthday yesterday, and chose to stay off the computer for the day. I definitely will never forget.
