100% untrue...depends on the lettuce.......yeah Iceberg is total junk...stuff like Romaine and Buttercrunch is very nutritious and and anti-inflammatory which in a day and age where peoples diets are so inflammatory is in itself a virtue for any food.

Of course I will agree...Kale is WICKED and considered a super-food...and that it is.

My personal favorite is sweet potatos.........you can undo a whole day of inflammatory eating with one decent sized sweet potato with some olive oil....or cut into strips as cottage fries with some garlic and cayenne pepper...bring on the ketchup and don't forget a couple of serranos which are also highly anti-inflammatory.

Mummmm. sweet potato mashed with a bit of orange juice is one of my favorite foods. Also, dehydrated sweet potato chips are pretty good.

You can make a soup with broth, kale, onion, sweet potato, ginger and a dash of salt and spice (I use tea masala, but you can just use cinnamon, ginger, pepper) that tastes lovely.

All things considered...my 9yo is 5th in a line of fistborn children, all daughters, and all of which are currently alive. My great-grandmother is 98 and she still gets around. You can die on your feet at 30, but I fully expect to be walking around, waving my arms, and giving snotty advice to my grandkids at 100. XP

Truth be told......if you know how to brew your own ale as well and can get enough sun during the summer months there is absolutely no reason at all that you need meat to survive.

Pretty much the only two common deficiencies a vegan will face in the modern world are Vitamin D.....easily provided with enough sun exposure......and B-12....which is abundant in brewer's yeast

Oh and don't even get me started on sun exposure is bad for you...LMAO......doctors sure have mastered the art of selling snake oil LOL.

yea I doubt we will keep it as it is now, at the moment the downside of freedom means we are wasting overly much fossil fuels and are re-producing too much.According to world population numbers it took us thousands of years to get 2.5 Billion people on the planet and in a mere 60 years we added double that number making it over 7 billion. More people = less for everyone. another down side is that when things get scarce the chance of a war increases as well.

On top, I work in healthcare and I once calculated the cost of a handicapped person per year, it's about 4-5 times as much as a regular person earns a year spent on the facility they live in, food, care, pocket allowance. 1 on 16 in my country are handicapped, this together with the cost of elderly and unrightful use of medication we are sharing a huge medical bill together and because it's by law that we have health insurance that also means there are already people in big trouble because they cant pay for basic utilities due to health insurance, so I think it's important to try to reduce the cost. I won't elaberate more on how and what coz i'm already waaaay offtopic:P but I do appreciate what we have now and I do recognize that we are currently living above the true value. the only positive way I see us keeping this up is if we transform energy usage to solar/wind instead of using fuels that can deplete and another way could be if we ever find out a way to get usefull stuff from space, but I doubt I would see that in my life time

living without gas/elec. isn't really motivated by these thoughts, but it is an additional reason of why it's good to try out at least once. I like to try it for a week because I like the old way of living and I like old tools and I want to know if I am cut out for it because I think I am, which is because almost all generations before me have been farmers and a lot of the older people in my family still barely use technology, they simply don't have a need for it though we did try to convince em to get a computer and cellphone to stay in touch or in case of emergency.

I would rather starve and die than even look at a sweet potato and thats a fact, I can't eat one no matter how it is fixed I have even had people hide them in food and even though I didnt know it was there it always comes back up very soon maybe I am alergic who knows but most veggies I do like.and I was talking traditonal lettuce ie iceberg which is the most common type grown in gardens.

Out of that came the challenge to try living like we're 100y back in time without electricty or gas and with old ways to do things

late oktobre I have a week off from work and I'm planning to do the week w/o electricty then. I will be turning off the main switches of both, the only electrical device I will keep on is my cellphone to make pictures of how I solved possible problems I come across and in case of a family emergency. The car will also be available for emergencies, but not for anything regular like groceries.

I will be using oil lamps for light, I'm hoping to have fullgrown my wintercrops by then (I currently have lettuce, kale and endive in the garden). I also have all the antique tools to spend time building new stuff without needing electricity (IE. block planes and a hand-drill). Working during the day and reading books in the evening should keep me occupied. It should be a pretty fun experience

The Netherlands dude.... You're from the Netherlands... If someone, or some country ever invents an EMP bomb for billions of euro's (or trillions of dragme ) they sure as hell are not gonna drop it on us, that would be quite the waste

Hehehehe...well we all have our dislikes and individual tastes I can respect your opinion of sweet potatos...more for me.

I will add to your "I would rather die" statement and say likewise to iceberg lettuce.....as my garden is pretty much archaic...which means I bust my hump to do it...including all hand tilling and hand weeding and composting, saving grass clippings and mixing with leaves...etc......that I would rather die than ever defile my beautiful garden by putting an iceberg seed in it ever!

Right now I have a whole row of romaines coming up quite nicely...but this is my first year of gardening and the previous tender did not tend very often and with the drought it was a rough first year...but I am really learning a lot and I'm already anticipating next spring and plan on growing stuff inside over the winter. Curious about growing a Tea Tree I planted a golden delicious and honey crisp this year...they are doing wonderfully.

It really is exciting......my little squirrel friends are quite the planters as well.....they already have three peanut plants going and I have been weeding baby corn plants all over the place which I would actually let grow but it's too late now.....they will never fruit in time for frost. But next year is gonna rock.....so long as the Mayans are wrong

Either way...I AM going to see all THREE Hobbit movies!!!!! *shakes fists*

Well...I don't know that it will come to such severity as war.......sometimes I just PO'ed because I really do hate humans and how they have abused all they have been given....and truly if ever a species needed to be put back in line it's humans.

A war is not going to help anything.....this is going to be much larger than a war of people fighting over resources.....I truly believe it is going to be nature slamming down the hammer and saying enough.....get over yourselves and I might let you keep something.

"Free will and freedom is completely worthless without discipline and conscientiousness.", but that last part is what people usually don't see.

but that's not the reason I'm bumping this topic. just wanted to say I finished my oven, I also made a list of food I will buy for that week, I gave myself a 10 euro allowance so I really had to puzzle together the best way to spend it. I came with the following:

    -Flour
    -Milk (3x)
    -potatoes 2.5kg
    -baking butter
    -Honey
    -Apples 1 sack
    -Rice
This comes to 9.80. I will be using tea as well but i have a lot of tea left at home, so that's a freebie

my chickens should give eggs, garden should give veggies.

pondering wether to use a radio or not, technically 100y ago they didnt broadcast in the netherlands, first broadcast was in 1909. also pondering wether to use a gasburner or not, would be convenient. But they didnt use gas, they used petroleum. I could get petroleum baskets to heat up stuff. we will see

*still following to see how this goes.*

vVvAiaynAvVv I can't grow indoor because my cat will eat the darn greens! Heck, we can't even have flowers for my wife on the table because he'll go munching. My wife didn't like the taste of arugula as it was so strong. After munching on one I had a thought. Yeap... he loves it also.

He also goes nuts for fresh baked bread. Then again given a cat grass package I just picked up I think I bought a clue. The seeds in it... oats, barly, rye, and one other grain I associate with bread.
Which... made me wonder. Would he like beer also? (my wife has said no to that one.)

Volkswagons - can be easily converted to run on biodiesel - vegetable oil and animal fat based - usually discarded by restaurants and such nowdays. If it ever came down to it, id still be driving, NP. It wouldnt be convenience driving mind you, but if I needed to get somewhere I wouldnt necessarily need to travel by animal or walk.

Woodstoves arent that tough to build and can not only be used to cook but can heat an entire house as well.

A week? We had to do that for three weeks here a few years ago, in the middle of winter

    A cat eh?

I have a stray black cat that has been around a couple times lately...just a couple days ago it was getting very friendly with me....I let it in the kitchen even and it took a few steps around but then wanted back outside.

See I feed the squirrels and birds everyday and that cat was just having a blast chasing them all over LOL.

So I am expecting it to be back soon and bought a food bowl for it...perhaps I can persuade it away from squirrels and birds for a little while anyways

It's interesting back in the yard tho...my squirrels are getting quite brave and very territorial.....I saw one a couple weeks back jumping at a a full grown hawk in a tree trying to scare it of...hehehe....and they couldn't be bothered to worry about the baby hawk that was in the yard with them about 3 days ago...they just kept munching on corn kernals.

You could always try the beer anyways eh........animals are quite the individuals at times

For instance I have two squirrels basically eating out of my hands......I mean they come running up to me every morning and I think I actually got a third today...while the rest just run up trees until I go back inside
