    Default Roleplay indicators

A small icon showing that a character is roleplaying, or keen to, might encourage people to roleplay more. It is never going to be a PNP experience but have really enjoyed slowly moving through quests and taking time to interact with other characters and the environment.

This game is afterall based on the mother of all... etc etc.

There seem to be very few roleplayers out there if the responses to my group LFM's are anything to go by.

I understand LOTRO has something of this kind and a good amount of roleplayers, but i dont want to play Lotro.

I would love this myself, along with possibly a channel. Sadly, I've seen people that were trying to get some open RP going all but chased out of General Channel for it.

    Default Not good

chased out of chat for roleplaying on Dungeons and Dragons? there surely is enough room for all types of players? but If they feel that strongly, maybe they should turn on the xbox? yesterday I put out an LFM in Korthos and got a guy who, when he realsied i wanted to play in character, jumped out and sent me a tell saying he didnt want to play in a dumb way? --- I didnt bother to retort!

There is a user chat channel on Sarlona, not sure if you know how to use it?

type /joinchannel rp Not had much luck as yet but will keep trying.
Do a search on the forums for custom chat channels for more info.

Good luck yourself and seek me out if you are ever on Cannith.

Yes, creating a channel would work. And was the snarling rant tossed out by those chasing off our innocent role players, torches and pitchforks in hand. Creating a channel allows the privacy to play, but it doesn't exactly invite others to join in. Some that might not know about the created channel. Or people that thought, and I know it's a stretch here but stay with me here, "DDO is based on a role playing game. There might be role play here!" If there was a flag, or better yet an official channel, that would do wonders to help those wanting to role play.

I'm not sure if I have any characters on Cannith, myself... My mains are all on Khyber.

Your best bet is to simply browse the Guild Forums and find an RP guild on your sever. Even a chat channel has issues, as inevitably, some knob who thinks its cute to grief RP'ers will join, and then you have start all over again with a new channel, repeating the cycle.

RP is like Permadeath now -- its a niche playstyle, not the standard. Most folks treat MMOs like a an online console game, rather than an actual RPG.

While I have no personal objections to an RP overhead icon, I dont think it will actually do much good. It wont be indicated in the LFM panel, and most folks tend to ignore the other avatars on their screen unless they are grouped -- in which case you are probably already in an RP group

Oh, I have a guild of role players to get my RP fix. I just think it would be awesome to have a way to indicate to others that you're willing/interested in role playing. Those of us that are interested would likely pay attention to such, while the rest of the players would likely ignore it. Currently, the only way you may get a hint of knowing if someone role plays is peeking at their bio and giving them a nudge to see. Usually, good bio = good chance of a role player. Formulas and quotes or stats, roll player. Not a definite, but seems to prove a good rule of thumb.

Can we also get small icons to indicate who wants to zerg, permadeath, casual play, power game, PvP, BYOB, and/or any other niche form of sub-genre of play in this game?

So sad that Role playing in "Dungeons and Dragons" Online is deemed to be niche!

This is a video game version of D&D, and most play it accordingly. In regards to role playing I have my pen and paper D&D campaign for that.

It may be sad, but that's the reality.

Yes im afraid it is a sad reality. However without trying to sound argumentative it is an MMORPG rather than a video game?

I envy you the opportunity to have a PNP group! Alas i have only fond memories and a box of musty tomes and worn dice.

If Turbine can put their time and energies into a gelatinous cube pet, then a little icon or dedicated chat channel for roleplayers is not a big ask.

The only time i drop character is when mentioning things like

"ill switch to my whatever class"

    and tells obviously.

Roleplaying is not the same thing as flowersniffing slow ass playing with badly gimped characters. Unfortunately many seem to think it is, and use it as an excuse for such.

I suspect your definition of roleplaying may be very different from mine.

Mine is playing a Role - taking on the persona of a character. Given that most of my characters are professional adventurers playing that role means kicking ass mostly. Conversation while doing so is ofcourse incharacter - often with accents and a little racism(for dwarves) and bizare mannerisms (for my wf).

Ive tried some roleplay groups in DDO.. they inevitably want to approach each quest like the character knows nothing, has never seen a kobold before and doesnt understand the basic concepts of combat. If any of my characters ended up adventuring with any characters like that they would probably go out of their way to protect the 'civilian'. well all except my wizard, who would be interested to observe the experiment of a random civilian placed in a dangerous situation.

Its dificult to maintain immersion when you run the same quests over and over - especialy raids. some where in the back of my mind i think its like were fighting a constant war as immortal devils reatke their fortresses every 3 days, and dragons come back from the dead.

You are far too suspicious, nobody mentioned horticulture or tight leather?

But my characters will now sleep safer in thier beds knowing that yours are Kick Ass!

ahh maybe i am just too suspicious.

I guess ive run into that many groups of 'roleplayers' that left a bad feeling with me. And as a roleplayer it realy does hurt.

I guess my crucial point was that in an action packed game like ddo staying in character is one thing - and i dont think any one would have an issue with that. But honestly ive met some folks that thoguht 'role playing' in ddo meant traveling through the dungeon at a snails pace, carefully examining each and every nook and crany and taking a good 10 minutes to chat about their findings.

I dint mean to imply the op cant play their characters.. jsut that ive met some roleplayers that well... um.. choose not to would be the best description.

I have a feelign that any roleplay indicator would just point these kinds of folks out, and despite being a roleplayer(by my own definition) its not something id want to suffer stigma for.

also.. theres nothing wrong with tight leather
