What is with the thread listing order here?

So far as I can tell, this is the only vB site I've ever been on where the default sort order in the thread display isn't "by last post". Clicking on the Last Post header sorts it that way, but then it goes back. Is this a setting somewhere?

I mention this because there's some threads that I'm interested in which are far enough back that they tend not to be on the front page unless it's sorted by last post...

Not sure I know exactly what you are talking about from the way you worded your post. But have you tried clicking "New Posts" near the top of the screen?

What I'm talking about is:

Say I click on a link like the link to "Website Feedback" up in the top area of this page (just below the menu). I get to a list of threads in the "Website Feedback" forum. Hmm. And in this forum, it looks like the sorting is "most recently active threads first".

Now say I go to Announcements & Contests. Look at the non-sticky threads; their last activity dates aren't in order.

Looking more closely, I suspect that specific forum has been set to sort by posting date. Problem is, there's a thread on the signup rewards program which is the only reference I have been able to find to that program, and with that sorting order, it is permanently buried; the only reason I found it is that the front page list of last activity happened to list it when someone posted in it. I've never found anything else in account management, signup, or anything else which links to that rewards program, even though it appears it's still active.

Maybe you have a weird setting somewhere? When I look at that link they're in order...

Edit: Never mind I just didn't look far enough down. It "almost" look sin order but not quite. interesting...

Auto-sorting for that page may not be active. Just click on "Last Post" at the top of the threads and it will sort them.

Turns out it's intentional -- that sub-forum specifically is ordered by first post date by default so old contests don't look new just because someone posted in their threads.
